Of course they will, why do you think they are mentioning it now? If they weren't going to make a big thing of it they wouldn't have mentioned it at all and would just let it reveal itself amongst the many other characters which we will be introduced to when they all return. By mentioning it now they are saying he is somehow more important than the others.

No, it’s called "representation" - they’re letting people who share those characteristics know someone like them is on the show.

Quote:
Imagine the first time when young children see a superhero or an astronaut on screen whose image looks like them. It is 2018, and for some kids, the historic moment of seeing Black Panther was their first time seeing a superhero of color on screen. Better yet, this groundbreaking film which has netted over $900 million dollars, could have been the first time seeing a predominantly black cast with a black director, black costume designers, black hairstylists, and more, actively producing representation in a positive light. Sandra Bullock’s astronaut character, Dr. Ryan Stone, in the 2013 film, Gravity, may have been the first occasion when young girls witnessed both a female astronaut and scientist on screen. The content our society views on screen is supposed to reflect its people, but all too often the entertainment and media industries tend to marginalize people of color, and women, just to name a few. Stories affect all areas of life in terms of how people view themselves, how they live their lives, and how they see others. Some of the content that these industries distribute to the public remains the only form of representation some individuals see, and these portrayals may be accurate or inaccurate. Media depicts stereotypical representations for people of color and women, whether through Hollywood or on the news, as violent criminals, the help, terrorists, submissive characters, highly sexualized beings, unintelligent people, and more. Similarly, there are concerns for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) populations and depictions of disabled persons. Seeing oneself on screen is crucial because society is not monolithic, but multifaceted.

or they could just let people watch the series because it looks good and they like the sound of the story and they can be pleasantly surprised when they find a new character they like and relate to. It might even contribute to their realism factor

In other words, you just made the point for us.

Every show must now have a black or coloured person, every show must have an LGBTQ whatever , gotta tick all those boxes now, and of course, you have to constantly promote/preach about it instead of just getting on with the story.

Its complete bollox and slowly destroying many shows, as viewing figures show (think Supergirl, Batwoman).

Of course, its perfectly possible to have variety ['representation'] and not constantly preach about it.
I dont particularly care for the new Equalizer, but I've watched a few, and they dont keep harping on about her colour (or sex) - they just get on with the show (and as a result, its doing quite well).

Forcing minority characters into every show is simply not realistic, the latest figures I could find for the UK were about 3% of the popilation is not Hetrosexual, the last figure I could find for the US was about 5%

Apparently a Gallup poll asking Americans what they thought the figure was says most estimated the figure at about 21 - 24%.
In other words, they over estimated by 4 or 5 times - I cant imagine why they over estimate it by so much .....

Getting back to the subject, I will give The 4400 a chance, but if it turns out to be another preachy pc show then I'll dump it.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Here's some food for thought. When you go shopping at e.g. Asda do you go because you like the range, prices and customer service or do you go because they have just put an advert on tv saying "at Asda 5% of our workforce is LBGT, 15% Black and 60% Women?" I am sure the public would like the know that the place they spend a large amount of their money on every week represents their local community and national diversity as a whole but it doesn't get rammed down your throat at every opportunity.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

Here’s food for thought - when you go shopping at Asda, how would you feel if none of the food on offer was what you liked, or what your family enjoyed eating? Isn’t it better than Asda (and other supermarkets) offer a wider range of foods, to cater for diverse tastes; isn’t it good they advertise this wider range of foods, and that way, they expand their customer base, and people who have never seen that sort of food before see that other foods are available, which leads them to (hopefully) understand "different" isn’t strange or frightening, just different…

doesn't work like that. I can tell you from first hand experience that if Asda doesn't sell x amount of something it disappears pronto. They look at £return/cubic foot. They have these lofty ideas and ideals and every now and again you get something quirky and unique coming in, whether it be eco friendly products, "help the farmers" etc etc, they all cost more for doing the right thing, not enough people buy them the products disappear in a flash. All new lines are driven by third party investment i.e. Walkers/Dolmio/McVities paying to do consumer research and monitoring customer behaviours and patterns. The brand names take the risk in investment in launching new lines which they subsidise supermarkets for and if they work out then Asda makes their own brand version of it. They like to flap about product quality, customer service, the environment and everything else but they only do it if it is worth their time and makes them £££ in direct sales or PR.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

If a show or story has a LGBTQ+ character or one of colour as part of the story fair enough but if they are just there because studios have to then it can ruin a show. The actor may not be good or suit the character but they need to have someone of that description now.

Take friends for example. If it was made now, there would be one white American, a LGBTQ+, a Latino, a black character etc. Just because and they would keep talk about said trait at every opportunity. Batwoman is guilty of it majorly and its ratings nose dived.

exactly, and that has been brought up many a time over the last few years due to the shows popularity and if they did do it it would be grade 1 shite. Friends is recognised globally as being phenomenal and magical so everyone obviously loves it and doesn't have a problem with it. If it ain't broken don't fix it and don't screw stuff up for the sake of it. You can have a diverse cast without having to make an issue out of it. Grey's Anatomy is the perfect example. They had many black actors from the outset but each person is their own unique character with so many facets that you love them for who the character is and you don't event think about the fact that they are black and that is how it should be. In real life we talk about direct and indirect discrimination in the work place and skin colour or gender identity shouldn't be the be all and end all of a character. It shouldn't matter and should be something that is a non-issue and in the background secondary to the crux o the story. Grey's has gone down hill big time over the last two seasons this, this season especially. They have dealt with their share of topical issues over the years and they have been handled really well and in keeping with a realistic story line. This year it has become less medical drama and more gay drama of the week and extra toppings of OTT mental health issues.

Re: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and other TV Snippets

yup. There is a reason why series such as Friends and GoT are so popular and successful; they are pretty much perfect and although when you look back it might turn out that some of the contributing factors weren't planned, were accidents or coincidences, things ultimately worked out. Series like Greys Anatomy, Batwoman and Supergirl have found out that when you move away from your core premise and start pushing your own agenda, your ratings and viewers plummet and you risk cancellation. I had a bit of a whinge about Seal Team a couple of weeks ago but they didn't dwell on it and have actually handled it very well.

What has that got to do with their workforce being black/white/lgb whatever

If Asda didnt stock what people wanted, they would buy it elsewhere.
(In fact, I do the opposite as Morrisons are my main shop, if they dont have it, I pop down the road to Asda).
Who on earth shops at Asda becasue their workforce is 60% Women ?

My metaphor was about representation in food (different types to attract a wider range of customers), not about staffing diversity.

Not my cup of tea but I can see appealing to a certain group of people. I going to group it with the too laid back Librarians and Warehouse 13 cheese.
