Minister backs high-speed rail to Manchester and Leeds

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11465786

Quote:
The government will back plans for high-speed rail links to Manchester and Leeds, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has said.
The planned new 250mph rail route between London and Birmingham aims to cut the journey time to 49 minutes.
Quote:
Mr Hammond said plans would "transform the economy" in north-east England.
How?

Quote:
He said it would help rebalance economies that the government believed had become too dependent on the public sector - by encouraging business investment in regions which have been considered too far away from London.
Oh it won't mean that people will commute from the North East to work in London then.

Well, as someone who travels to London a couple of times a month (and the trains are always crowded), I applaud this.

But isn't it supposed to be getting business to move from London to the NE?

Well if you can simply move commuters that are earning london wages up north that means (in theory) they will bee spending their hard earned wages up there, leading to increased money in the northen economy which in turn makes it more attractive to businesses etc
