home network queery

hope someone can point me in the right direction with this cos i can figure it out.
here's the setup:
desktop running xp pro
laptop with the same.
belkin 802.11b wireless router (model no:f5d5230-3)

desktop is cabled to the router, laptop is wireless.

problem: all was working fine till 2 days ago when i decided to enable wep on the router. connection to the internet is fine on both machines.... but i have folders on the desktop, mapped to the laptop which are causing the problems.
i can view these folders from the laptop, but whenever i try to access any of them, the laptop slows to a crawl, briefly displays the contents of the folder then goes on to display an empty folder! when retrying to access any mapped folder, i get a prompt that all network drives have been disconnected! at this point, I also lose all internet connectivity on the laptop...and desktop, and cannot even access the router...just get pcbd on everything!!! only way i can resolve this is to pwr the router on and off. this gives me connectivity again... but any time i try to access any mapped folder, i get the same problem!!!
disabling wep is a quick fix, but would rather keep this if anyone point out where the problem might be

Have you set the folder to shared?

Re: home network queery

hi david.

yeh... the folders in question are all shared.
I've tried mapping other folders..and these too work fine....until wep is enabled on the router.

Re: home network queery

Wep is useless. Update the firmware, get new drivers for your wireless cards, SP2 on your PCs and then use WPA.

Re: home network queery

thanks guys..

am looking to update the routers firmware at the moment... there's no update for my specific router (belkin f5d5230-3) but there is an update for the next model up (f5d5230-4) any ideas if this would cause a problem?

Re: home network queery

thanks for the responses guys.
aint having much luck though... the firmware for the updated model dont seem to be working.

am following the info here http://web.belkin.com/support/downlo...r_Firmware.pdf

but when i've selected the bin file and click start to run it... i just get a message "upload data error! please make sure your file is correct!"

and am getting the updated firmware from here http://networking.belkin.com/update/#2 as directed to from the router, the list doesnt specifcly include my router, but it has the next one up, the -4 one.
just had another look at mine..and it says 802.11b 11mbps...so would assume thats what it is?

---------- Post added at 00:46 ---------- Previous post was at 00:28 ----------

apologies to nffc.. i read your message wrong. thought u was saying that my router was a G not a b. too many late nights

---------- Post added at 00:54 ---------- Previous post was at 00:46 ----------
