Nightmare !!

hi guys,

ok sTay with me here this is a nightmare, my friend wants to add wireless to his network. Currently he just has 1 desktop computer connected through virgin media talk talk ADSL.

The setup at the moment is as follows:

Broadband---Splitter to phone and to another spliter ---Modem (through broadband socket of splitter)--computer (through phone socket of the splitter)
Also the modem gets power of the computer through USB it has no ac adaptor.

So can the modem be taken out of this equastion? or does it needed to be in it?

also where does the router go? New router is adsl netgear. after wireless added another laptop will be added to the network which is on vista, the desktop is xp.

ok so you have a netgear adsl router.
you have talk talk adsl through a virgin land line.
1 laptop running vista and a desktop running xp.
what you need to do is:

1)make sure everything is unplugged
2) connect the cable from the phone socket ie splitter/filter using the socket called modem into the router
3) connect the xp desktop via ethernet to the router
4) plug power in to the router you shouldnt need the modem anymore and then wait for all lights to stop flashing.
5) when they stop power up the pc get in to windows and see if you have internet access
6) if no access then run the install cd that came with the router
7) when that is done turn on the laptop and they should be a icon at the bottom right hand, side of the screen that will either look like a antenna or a computer with little lines coming from it, sort of like these ))
8) double click that then click to refresh wireless networks to see if it finds any
9) choose the netgear and check the box automatically connect when windows starts

this should help you get it sorted however you will need to turn on the wireless protection or the broadband will be used by other people at your friends exspence

what if on the vista it finds no networks even when i refresh?
