Re: [Merged] Snow!
Is anyone wondering where they're going to be, the day after tomorrow?

Re: [Merged] Snow!
We have had some slightly less common visitors in the garden lately, such as this woodpecker, a few minutes ago.

Usually, yes - but yesterday, I had to go outside and pour warm water over two sets of pipes; the condensate pipe from our condensing boiler, and the outflow pipe from our en-suite sink - both were blocked by ice (very unusual, I know).

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Blummin outflow pipe from the washing machine gets frozen. Doesn't help that the sensor which prevents the door opening when the machine is full of water is not working.
Still, out with the hair-dryer & soon sorted

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Well, after nearly 4 hours of hot air blast from our 3kW heater the scullery finally thawed out. I came back in to find hot water pouring merrily down the sink. At the same time I was trying to: block off air bricks with sheets of A4; drain some hot water from pipes near radiator to encourage frozen bit to melt; assisting jump starting neighbours car; checking our two cars would fire up (Mrs A's locks were frozen) and clearing / defrosting mine. The radiator wouldn't unblock until I gave it 20mins of blast from the heater under the floorboards. Luckily, there is an access hatch nearby.
The washer seems to have survived okay - touch wood. I ran a quick cycle and loads of muck came out but there were no leaks. It appears the water came from next door's scullery where they'd had a burst pipe.
Unions seem fine except for the one containing the bleed valve. There's a little seepage from one side where I've been flexing it trying to make the cold water run downhill. One other advantage of plastic pipes is there are very few joints.

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Needed to get to the garden shed for a shovel to clear the drive. Outside our kitchen door is a kind of lean-to with storage, workbench, tumble dryer etc. Door from here to the garden wouldn't budge. Turned out that since the cooker hood vents into this area (the tumble dryer vents outside), as the moisture-laden air blew through the gaps round the door, ice formed and sealed it solid. Some hair-dryer time and a few kicks later, then a fish-slice (it was nearest, OK?) and we broke through to freedom!
Now what was it I was supposed to be doing?

We are having the same problem with the condensing pipe today. Lost track of how many kettles of water we have used and have now resorted to heating wet towels in the microwave as they keep the pipe warmer for longer. Pipe still not unblocked.

Still crispy, crunchy in Glasgow. Walking over one of the city centre bridges earlier and the Clyde was pretty frozen as well.

I'm due in Glasgow on Monday. Don't think trekking boots or snow shoes go with me suit though.

Snow and icy conditions
I am always amazed by local authorities when it comes to this type of weather.
Every town in the country is being effected and the authrorities are saying they are doing all they can, but what about the side roads and little towns, if the councils know that the weather is going to be bad like it is now, they can't they arrange for the spreaders to go down side roads at least once every couple of days to insure these roads are at least clear apart from the main roads.
The road where l live is like an ice rink, and you would have thought that councils would have had the 'payback' people down them to help clear the roads, so that the residents can at least walk down the road.
I saw a spreader in a car park, which to me is a waste of time, as the more cars on it, the snow will clear, and then they claim they are running out of the salt for the roads, here we go again, Authorities can't get the act together, it is true what a lorry driver said on tv, it does not happen in any other country where they hit by snow and ice.

Re: Snow and icy conditions
We don't get this weather often Arthur so its not financially viable for us to prepare every year as other regular snow and ice affected countries do.
Edit
I was bored in the house today, so rather than moan about how cold it was and sit here with the heating on full blast. I popped around to the old peoples home and cleared some of the pathways off.
It got me out the house, warmed me up, the exercise was good for me and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. The tea and toast supplied was nice
