The end of Prescott's legacy....
Well after a long, thoroughly underwhelming and massively hypocritical career in politics his main non-pugilistic claim to fame is at last being scrapped!

Well they won't head south that's for sure?
Actually, I heard a taxi driver bemoaning the decision yesterday. His view was that they'd be worse off as a result.

The ones on the news were saying that it would take longer and cost more which they found amusing.
It has always been a white elephant.

Well maybe they like sitting in traffic. You're quite right - it always was an ill conceived idea and I reckon 99% of the users of that section of the M4 will be delighted.

I wish they'd also scrap his High Hedges Law... the ASBO part is gone AFAIK so it is unenforceable I believe.

Re: The end of Prescott's legacy....
I find it ridiculous that the initial cost of removing the M4 bus lane is going to be £409,000 only for it to be reinstated for the 2012 Olympics which will again cost more money.
I know the article is from the Daily Fail.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti....html?ITO=1490
Quote:
The first move towards the M4 Bus Lane's demise will begin on November 8, 2010 when an 'Experimental Order' under Section 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 will be made suspending the M4 Bus Lane from December 24 2010 for 18 months.
|
Quote:
The 'Experimental Order' will expire in June 2012 before Olympic Delivery Agency(ODA) begins its traffic management measures on the stretch of the M4 from Junction 1 to 7 which has been designated as part of the Olympic Route Network as a VIP ‘Games Lane’.
Ministers expect sufficient data should be collected during 2011 to support the permanent removal of the bus lane , which will be done via a Revocation Order.
The cost of initial removal of the M4 bus lane is estimated at £409,000.
However this figure excludes the cost of its reinstatement for the period of the London Olympics and of any subsequent modifications once the removal be made permanent.

I reckon all the athletes and spectators should run to and from the events..... very "green", low carbon footprint, very healthy...

Re: The end of Prescott's legacy....
It seems to me that if such lanes were going to be used temporarily for a major event like the Olympics, that might be worthwhile providing that the useage would be substantial and costs of so doing aren't ridiculous. Having said that, with all the hoops, red tape and regulations applicable to such things I wouldn't be at all surprised if it'd turn out to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds and wind up being used by a very select few people.
