ASUS RT-N66U Firmware Query

I've recently upgraded to an ASUS RT-N66U router.

I'm using the ASUSWRT firmware currently, v3.0.0.4.378.9529.

Is it worth staying with the ASUSWRT firmware, or should I switch over to the ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware, v3.0.0.4.380.58.

The Merlin firmware does have the ability to turn off the LEDs, as my router is not on it's stand and on a shelf above my PC, so I'm unable to see the LEDs from where I'm sat (shelf is approximately 28in above my PC desk).

Re: ASUS RT-N66U Firmware Query

In other words, I'm asking for people's opinions on which firmware is best, ASUSWRT or Merlin?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U Firmware Query

Wouldn't it be better to ask on an Asus forum or even the Asus-Merlin forums?

Re: ASUS RT-N66U Firmware Query

Yes, switch to Merlin, specifically the Merlin fork that uses the older, better range, wireless drivers:

[Fork] Update for 374.43 available (V17E5)

Re: ASUS RT-N66U Firmware Query

Problem with installing the 374.43 firmware, is that I'm already on v378.9529 ASUSWRT firmware. So, I would need to use the recovery utility I think. Also, I don't think v374.43 is compatible with the ASUS Router iOS app.

From what I remember you just flash the new (fork) firmware and then do a factory reset. I don't use the iOS app so cannot comment on that ..
