Network Cable Question
Im in the process of moving my room around after redecoration and wish to place my NAS in a different place but requires a longer Network cable.
What cable do i need Cat6 or Cat6e, Patch or not patch etc?
If anyone could help that would be great.

Patch means short cable as in about 50cm designed to connect network switches to patch panels. I presume you mean crossover or straight which as most ports are auto set it doesn't really matter but in the old days straight tend to connect devices to hubs and crossover from device to device. Cat 6 or 6e? If you're only going upto gigabytes then get either..
As to exact answers it's about 9 inches that wet piece of string... In other words details like distance, speed..etc are needed before you'll get an exact answeer

well it will be connected to a 1gb/s ethernet card and the NAS is capable of 1gb/s and im looking at 5m cable.

Is it direct to the card or via a hub..
Either way just get a straight cat6, though at that short distance a cat 5 will do as long as both are auto sense if going direct to the PC otherwise a crossover will be needed.
Now if you were doing 50+m then I'd start to be fussy about the cable spec
Perhaps a 10m is better for you as it can be coiled but will allow moving it later on if needed

If you are putting the cable behind walls or skirting and it's difficult to replace buy the best you can get and it should have some future proofing.

yeah, there is no way you are going to get gigabit speeds off your nas but the general consensus these days is cat6a. Don't get yourself in a tizz though, cat5e will be more than sufficient.

I have had cat6 Belkin cables given to me 3 x 5m. These are more than sufficient.
