Re: WiFi VoLTE Calling Coming To Virgin Media

It's VoWiFi which is now available, not VoLTE.

Re: WiFi VoLTE Calling Coming To Virgin Media

VoLTE is 4G calling.

Without it then 4G is used for data but 3G is used for voice calls, so may have different signal availability between the two.

I'm pretty sure VoLTE is a required part of a 5G service so as Virgin Media have already announced they will doing 5G plans, then I'd expect that VoLTE will appear at some point.

You get VoLTE on 4G too, you can test this by putting phone in airplane mode and turning on Data, if you can make calls you have it.

Samsung phones (at least) don't let you turn on mobile data only while in airplane mode.

But as far as I know, Virgin Media haven't yet got VoLTE, so a 4G phone will drop back to 3G for voice calls until they do.

I can on my S7 on either Three or EE, maybe you cant on newer models.

Edit

Apologies i got confused with Voice over Wifi i blame the title of the thread , you can't use data in airplane mode.

But VoLTE is the same as Voice over 4G.

Re: WiFi VoLTE Calling Coming To Virgin Media

I've got an S10 and it comes up with warning as to why you can't enable it.

And the good news for me is that although it's a device bought directly from Samsung, it does work with the Virgin Media WiFi Calling service after the appropriate update.

Wherever EE have 4G1800 or 4G2600, they have 2G or 3G as well - this is required in order that non-VoLTE calls fallback on those legacy technologies.

In order to make voice calls on 4G and allow seamless handover between WiFi & mobile you need VoLTE which is also why EE's 800Mhz coverage is restricted to direct-PAYM customers.

EE PAYG customers will be the next to get VoLTE access.

They kept this quite, I found it today on my Iphone XR just by chance. Don't know if the update had anything to do with it. Good to have it back though.

I've a s7 edge, but can't find the "turn on WiFi calling" Option. But I've definitely seen it before.

Re: WiFi VoLTE Calling Coming To Virgin Media

The S7 isn't supported for Virgin Mobile WiFi Calling. Nor is the S8.

For Samsung devices it's the S9 and above i.e. Android 10 (April 2020 security patch) or later.

For iOS it's the 6s and above i.e. iOS 13.4 or later.
