Getnet router

Just bought a getnet router to replace the wnr2000 netgear one supplied by virgin as there router didn't have great wireless especially since it was downstairs and the pc and xbox 360 are upstairs.

This new router seems to have a delay on the internet for example firefox sometimes works great then it seems to lag like the page is waiting to load for a while sometimes having to come back out and go back in.

Same with my stepson who reported that his 360 keeps dropping a signal although the downstairs laptop reports full signal and upstairs the pc reports a 90% signal.

Router was set to short preamble but changed that to long to see if that would make a difference and I am on channel 11 which seems ok to me when I checked is there anything else I can check? router is set to 2,4ghz b+g+n well thats all it can do anyway
