Diversity and protection of supply.

Hopefully they will also be able to get one to Iceland in the future and tap into all their Thermal energy.

Thought the gas was used to preserve the chicken, not kill them?

Both probably . . CO2 to kill them, then CO2 refrigerant for transport to supermarkets

It is commonly used to euthanise male chicks, but more humane CO2 is now used to put them to sleep before they are hung upside down, and electrically killed.

Don't they pump oxygen into meat packets too, it makes the meat look more red.

I hear Mr K mumbling something about the carbon footprint of extracting oxygen from somewhere.

Didn't know Mick was a veggie. Sort of out of character!

Are the days of veggies being woke lefty hippies and carnivores beer-swilling furious Farage fans behind us?

“Modified atmosphere packaging” is intended primarily to improve shelf life, rather than cosmetic appearance. I believe different concentrations of gases are used depending on the product they are packaging.

I can only assume that Mr K was recalling Johnson's promise to cut VAT on energy prices if we left the EU.

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/121870...s-back-brexit/
Bit rich for him to come out with all that when it was a Tory Government that put VAT on fuel back in the early nineties (in order to subsidise and keep down the unpopular Poll Tax/Community Charge).

It started at 8% and was due to go up to the full rate. The incoming Labour Government scrapped the planned rise and reduced it to 5%. When asked why they hadn't scrapped it completely, they said that they weren't able to scrap it entirely once it had been introduced due to EU rules.

Now that we've left the EU, it would be possible to scrap it if any present or future Government is/was minded to.

I remember all this as my accountant advised me to pay as much as I could afford in advance in order to delay having to pay VAT on fuel. I did so as there weren't any bank accounts paying 8% at the time

This loophole worked as long as there was no change of address

No they use CO2 or Nitrogen as this preserves the items longer.

I know that Nitrogen is used in crisps

1. Freeze it;

2. Chisel out a very big hammer;

3. Apply said hammer with force to the animal's head.

Slowly…

https://www.poultryworld.net/Health/...rest-2766995W/

Quote:
The Marel Stork system gently unloads the broilers onto a trampoline-like belt which transports them to the stunning system. Then they are exposed to less than 40% CO2 for one minute after which the CO2 level is slowly built up to a higher percentage. At Meyn Food in terms of stunning mechanism the same process is applied, only in that case the chicks go, along with the transport container, in the stunning device in which the CO2 concentration is built up gradually in more steps.” One minute of 40% CO2 is, according to the senior researcher, enough to stun the animals, which is fully evidenced by extensive scientific research. According to Gerritzen, it is very important that the CO2 percentage is built up slowly. “Otherwise the product quality loss will be too high due to rapid muscle convulsions.”
