Indeed, as Janet Fielding (Teegan in Classic who) said in one of her commentaries, the assistants in the classic series where frequently there as plot devices, as someone for the Dr to explain some plot point to. She said that she actually likes the way that new Who actually does build the companions (as they are now) into full, 3d, characters complete with outside relationships and backgrounds.

Thinking about it, I agree. Not in all cases (Romana was a companion who was as much of an integral character as the Dr, for instance), but in a lot.

Don't forget Adric, I don't know if I would consider him to be "deus ex machina." Nissa maybe though. Turlough had quite a back story as well. I didn't see much after Davidson, but I understand Ace came with some baggage too.

Oh, I know there were others. I just picked Romana because that character came to mind first.. And I fancied Lalla Ward (and to some extent, Mary Tamm, but not as much as Lalla).

Ace had tonnes of baggage, but it just contrived to make her a walking, talking cliche. Very little was well-drawn about the 7th Doctor's era, although it had its moments.

But then, by the standards of the time, it wasn't too bad. It did add some dimension to her character.

I actually saw more of Sophie Aldred after her tenure on DW. She played host to many children's programmes I used to watch when Flyboy11 and Flyboy9 were babies and toddlers.

Who watched it on BBC One? Apparently you get a typical US TV styled banner on it.

Yup

My Sky+HD box crashed while on BBC HD so I had to switch to BBC1 on Freeview.

Near the end there was an extremely annoying US-style banner, with a cartoon Norton, advertising that stupid Dorothy thing on afterwards.

Sod it. I've complained to the Beeb.

It is bad enough when you interrupt the end credits of a programme to advertise the following programme, but to interrupt & intrude upon the actual programme itself is completely unacceptable.

I don't suppose there's an mp3 (legit of course) of the new theme so I can use it as my ringtone.

I know most people think it's crap and all that = but I want it lol.
