Well I was away, but looking at my monitor, I see a 7 minute downtime around 11.45 am yesterday.

Have VM's systems gone down again internally? I'm finding it virtually impossible to run the online service status today, it just keeps going to the error screen

Cable BB used to be rock solid, but in the last few months it's become very flaky. What's changed? Are VM being attacked? Will we ever be told? So many questions......

Seriously?
One of the main complaints on this site (and it’s predecessor) was how flaky the Broadband was…

Not from everyone, and also, thats mostly many years ago, not so much in recent years.

Mine is OK but my mum reported issues near B'rum. And since her phone goes via BB now it made chatting with her the other night difficult.
