ASUS RT-AC66U Firmware upgrade?

I have just purchaser the RT-AC66U to go with my Virgin Media SH2. I know for my needs it is over kill but I mainly got it so I can change the DNS servers and thought if I was changing it get a half decent router (after going cheap with a Tenda N60 which kept losing its settings). My question is I have seen various articles on using different firm ware than the stock firmware, and wonder if a basic user , i.e me, would have any benefit to doing this bearing in mind my limited knowledge with anything other than changing basic settings in terms of options. If it provides better wireless/speed as an example then I think its worth doing it. If so what are the main reasons for a change of Firmware andwhat would be a good choice of firmware and really stupid question where do you down load them from. Thanks in advance

Re: ASUS RT-AC66U Firmware upgrade?

Check the Merlin variant of the ASUS firmware at http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/forumdisplay.php?f=42, adds more features and bug fixes onto the base ASUS firmware.

You should also check out (pardon the pun) the 374.43 fork of the Merlin firmware here: http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/sh...ad.php?t=18914 This retains the wireless range that later builds reduced ..
