I am fascinated by being able to enter a proxy IP and have my IP be different!!

How is this possible??

Im not talking about WEB PROXIES Im talking about raw IPs you put in your browser and it uses that!!

How does your browser bypass YOUR ISP to give you the IP of that proxy??

I used one from the UK before and went to whatismyip.info and it gave me that info!!

My browser (MyIE2) has an option for PROXY SETUP under options..... IE6 (And all IE versions) also has an option to set a proxy IP under INTERNET OPTIONS/CONNECTIONS but I havent ever set one up there......

Its just fascinating to me!!!!!

Exactly, you are redirecting your requests to a [web] proxy server.

All that happens is that server requests the page you want, then passes it back to you. So the site you are visiting just sees the proxy servers IP, not yours.

[ That said, many proxy servers pass on your original IP in the request headers, so the final site still has access to it, if it wants. ]

It isnt, as I just explained.

Your request is sent to the proxy (in Taiwan).
The proxy sends that request onto the final site (whatismyip.info).
That returns the Taiwan IP, since thats where (to it) the request came from.
The proxy returns the page, displaying that Taiwan IP, back to you.

Your IP has never changed.

As Paul said previously, for a proxy server, what happens is

Quote:
All that happens is that server requests the page you want, then passes it back to you. So the site you are visiting just sees the proxy servers IP, not yours.

[ That said, many proxy servers pass on your original IP in the request headers, so the final site still has access to it, if it wants. ]
As Avast explain it re a VPN

Quote:
A VPN masks your IP address by acting as an intermediary and rerouting your traffic. It also adds encryption, or a tunnel around your identity, as you connect. The combination of the VPN server and the encryption tunnel blocks your ISP, governments, hackers, and anyone else from spying on you as you navigate the web
