Using a router as a switch

I was looking at getting a small 4 port switch to replace a hub sat in one corner of the room, but was offered one of these KCorp KLG-575 routers for nothing and thought that would do the job just as well - given a router is basically a switch + extras.

Unfortunately it seems to refuse to play nicely and run the same subnet across both the WAN side and LAN side. Has anybody had any success using a router as a switch before? Any suggestions that might make it behave as I want?

Don't you just need to disable the DHCP server and ignore the WAN port?

I think it's time to get some sleep! I should have realised that rather than confusing things with VLANs and trying to have too many IP addresses crammed locally into the router.
