Hello all.
I used to be a moderator on CF long ago when it was NTL.
I finally got fed up of waiting for openreach (who I used to work for) to get a fibre node FTTP or even FTTDP. I have been paying £80 odd for years for an 80/20 service with 5 IP's and RDNS.
So I have taken the plunge and gone for the 1Gig VOOM business service with 5 IP's and reverse DNS. So everything I got before but faster (hopefully) and for less for six months. Even after that it will be cheaper.
I had the engineer in today to do the fit, he spent an hour talking to someone at virgin as he could not get his head round the 5IP setup. He was trying to set the modem up and attempting to set the default gateway up. He left with it kind of working but 30 minutes later the modem/router seemed to go into some form of update mode with the U/S and D/S led's blinking then staying blue. After this I had nothing and discovered the router had factory defaulted (firmware update maybe)......
So I managed to log in and also to confirm the router is a Hitron Chita. Its the model with two VOIP ports. The usb and reset button appear to be in different places compared to the image on the VM site but its close enough. My problem is thus....
According to the online guide I should log in and set my IP range and subnet for the lan despite the fact I will be using it in bridge/modem mode passed direct to a decent Sophos firewall. The guide is suggesting I should set up the local ip range as described above but then asks you to configure a GRE username and password. After an hour on the phone I managed to get the credentials despite being told the GRE username and password was for engineer use only.
I do recall from way back that NTL/CABLETEL used to assign a dynamic IP and then put a mac to ip reservation in it. I managed to get the IP range from them and they have me the 7 ip block telling me I got an extra two free ip's for some reason and they would not get the fact that the first and last IP of the 7 are for broadcast and network use leaving me with the 5. Anyway I now have all the correct credentials I am sure its just a case of configuring the modem and what should and should not be done... Oh how I miss my PPPOE already.
I am hoping someone in the know or on the same package can just double check some details with me. I will post the log data for the connection bellow. I also noticed a 6DB attenuator has been put inline with the modem. I am sure someone will be able to tell me if that should be fitted.
I have attached the logs and data I expect you will need to spot any issues...... N.B. I have just performed a full factory reset so the data may only be of use with spotting power level's and SNR ect.
Thank you very much for your time and attention reading all this.
Stuart
P.S. Feels nice to be back
