Just recieved the above router.
Have read a bit on the forum about the setup.

Should I follow the instructions or would any kind soul like to give me tips?

Will be connecting to a laptop, PS3 and Wii (DS in the future!!)

Re: Linksys WRT54GL set up

Whack DD-WRT firmware on it from www.dd-wrt.com and it'll run a lot nicer. Remember to enable WPA encryption and to be extra safe it might be worth using MAC filtering too.

I'd highly recommend the Tomato firmware.

Tomato support forums

Re: Linksys WRT54GL set up

Thanks guys.

Novice talking here tho, initially need to know any secrets to just getting it working first. At work but going to set up when I get home.
Sometimes people recommend not reading instructions as they dont give optimum setup.

Re: Linksys WRT54GL set up

Ok, don't worry about different firmware to start with, just use whatever Linksys have installed. If you find later that isn't up to your needs then you can upgrade. That is the advantage of the WRT54GL, it's designed to be flashed, compared to many routers that you are stuck with what you get.

Basic setup is simple.

Power off computer, routers, modem
Wire modem <> router internet (WAN) port
wire router intranet (LAN) port <> computer network card

Power up modem & let settle
power up router and let settle
power up computer

the computer should just connect and do it's stuff to the internet

Now you can browse to the router settings admin page (check the manual for the IP address for internet explorer and password) something like 192.168.1.1 and admin / admin. Most config you can ignore but perhaps change the admin user password. Set the wireless security to WPA and use a decent password. Change the wireless SSID to something ambiguous that you will know but doesn't tell your neighbours it's you. Change the default channel for wireless to something else to reduce likelihood of conflict with those nearby who are on default.

Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best to use.

Re: Linksys WRT54GL set up

The IP address to use in the internet explorer address bar will be the same as the network connection gateway (check it's status). As for the user name / password you are asked for when it tries to connect you'll need to read the manual if it is not admin / admin. It may be that there is no password

Per the manual, the default is blank username and password admin
