Choosing a new Apple tree
Hi,
Does anyone recommend an apple tree?
I've currently got a Jona Gold but it is a self sterile so will polinate off others but not give back.
I need a tree that is ideally self fertile to also give to the Jona Gold.
Anyone got any experience with Saturn, Fiesta, or maybe Scrumptious?
Many thanks.

Try a duo or triple apple tree?, different varieties grafted on to one rootstock. Not only will you get different apples from one tree but they'll pollinate each other. Personally don't think you can beat a Coxs orange pippin for taste.

Re: Choosing a new Apple tree
The duos and triples (even up to 50+ varieties on one rootstock) are usually good value for money and can be on dwarfing rootstock to keep the tree a manageable size.
I had to buy a second Quince as it was nowhere near as "self fertile" as expected.
Ideal pollinators : Gala, Empire, Fuji, and Honeycrisp.

No expert, but one of our 4 is a James Grieve, and it's lovely.

Re: Choosing a new Apple tree
I know it's not related to your original question but you do know planting an apple seeds is a bit of a lottery as apples are especially heterozygous so when it comes to the the resultant tree is could be any variety.

You could end up with a Bramley type!
