Setting up a router as an AP?

I'm just wondering I have an Asus RT N56U and it doesn't reach the west side of the house for signal.

So I have the old Netgear router that Virgin supplied a while ago and was going to set it up as an access point.

I found a guide that looks pretty simple enough but what it doesn't explain is will I need to run an Ethernet cable from the Asus router to the netgear in order to get it running? the guide doesn't actually say.

The other thing is will it work better than buying a wifi extender as I've read extenders aren't very good

Yes you will need an ethernet cable.

The whole point (and definition) of an access point is a device that provides access to the wired network. Obviously that cannot work if the device itself has no access to the wired network.

Google DD-WRT. If your Asus has this custom firmware available then you can set it up as a wireless bridge.

I have a Linksys E1200 (Cisco) running DD-WRT that bridges wirelessly to a Netgear DGND3700.

Don't think DD-WRT is supported but Padawan firmware is apparently capable of this

The only problem with a wireless bridge is that you may lose speed as it' soundly a half duplex connection. Using Powerline adapters would be better as they are much faster
