Don't take a fence here but you might have jumped to the wrong conclusion. The evidence points to the death of a horse who has the same birthday as Chicago Bay but he is not the only competitor with that birthday

Dynaste went one place better after his surprise defeat at the Cheltenham Festival with a smart display in the John Smith's Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree.

Stepping back up in distance, David Pipe's grey was the 9-4 joint-favourite to gain compensation for what happened in the Jewson and did so in some style. Tom Scudamore sat towards the rear of the field for much of the three-mile-one-furlong journey but arrived there travelling powerfully at the top of the home straight.

Ubak turns up heat in Mersey.

Gary Moore's Ubak shed his maiden tag in some style by running out a surprise winner of the John Smith's Mersey Novices' Hurdle at Aintree.

Having beaten just one home when a 100-1 shot for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, the five-year-old was 22-1 for his latest assignment and tracked Utopie Des Bordes and Seefood into the straight after favourite Up And Go dropped away.

Once asked to go about his business by the trainer's son Jamie, the response was hugely impressive. Ubak quickly put daylight between himself and his rivals, hopped over the last and continued to extend his lead all he way to the line, passing the post with 16 lengths in hand.

World Hurdle hero Solwhit turned in another superb display in the hands of Paul Carberry to claim the John Smith's Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree.

Charles Byrnes' talented but fragile nine-year-old (9-4 favourite) was always travelling well in the middle of the pack and was still cruising in behind the leaders at the top of the home straight, but Carberry was keen to bide his time.

The ultra-confident jockey was looking round for dangers between the final two flights and Solwhit sealed victory with a spring-heeled leap at the last. He kicked on up the run-in to score by three lengths from Holywell, with Smad Place back in third.

Bryan Cooper's great season continued as he guided Special Tiara to victory in the John Smith's Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.

One of the rising stars of the National Hunt weighing room, Cooper rode three winners at last month's Cheltenham Festival and enjoyed his first Aintree winner aboard First Lieutenant in Thursday's Betfred Bowl.

With Grand Annual winner Alderwood, Arkle runner-up Baily Green and the ever-popular Overturn in the field, it was no surprise to see Henry de Bromhead's charge sent off a largely unconsidered 28-1 shot for this Grade One event

Aintree director John Baker believes British racing should be "tremendously proud" and vowed the track "will not stand still" after the 2013 John Smith's Grand National passed without serious incident.

The world's most famous steeplechase has faced fierce criticism since the death of two horses 12 months ago, and significant modifications have been made to the course, including the rebuilding of fences, with new plastic cores replacing the traditional timber and protective rubber padding.

Seventeen of the 40 runners completed, with only two horses officially falling, with 14 pulled up, six unseating their riders and one horse refusing at the final obstacle. Victory went to the Sue Smith-trained 66-1 outsider Auroras Encore, ridden by Ryan Mania.

Channel 4 happy with audience.

A peak audience of 8.9 million watched the John Smith's Grand National on Channel 4 on Saturday as the race was shown on the TV station for the first time.

The figure is short of the 10.89 million on the BBC 12 months ago, but higher than the amount of viewers on that channel for 2010 and 2011.

Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: "I'm delighted that Channel 4's first year covering the Grand National was enjoyed by nearly nine million people. It's testament to the innovative approach of the new Channel 4 racing team and the efforts of the whole channel in supporting this iconic event."

An air ambulance was called to Hexham as Grand National-winning rider Ryan Mania had anything but a dream return to action when he suffered a nasty fall.

The Scotsman, who steered Auroras Encore to a famous 66-1 success at Aintree on Saturday, was linking up once again with trainer Sue Smith in the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle. However, his mount Stagecoach Jasper came down early on the final circuit.

Some 25 minutes after the race the 23-year-old Mania was still being attended to on the track by medics. With the covers up, there was a delay to racing following the arrival of the air ambulance.

Grand National-winning rider Ryan Mania hopes to leave hospital on Monday, when he will have a precautionary MRI scan after his crashing fall at Hexham.

Mania, 23, was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Newcastle following the fall on his return to action after winning the National on the Sue Smith-trained Auroras Encore at Aintree on Saturday. The Scotsman was linking up once again with Bingley-based Smith in the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle, but his mount Stagecoach Jasper came down early on the final circuit.
