Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
I hope Discovery do an deal with BT Sport as way back in 1990 WWE was on Eurosport every Friday night with an show called WWF* Prime Time when Sky part own Eurosport - Before Sky took over BSB and has an Sport channel - that was started by BSB.
*WWE was called WWF that the time.

Have to agree, would be strong competitor to sky with the BT content.

Premiership Rugby to return to terrestrial on ITV with live games and highlights.
Premiership Rugby has agreed a deal to show live matches and highlights on ITV in a move that ends the English top division’s exile from free-to-air television.
BT Sport will remain the primary broadcast partner but ITV will simulcast a handful of live games each season, including the Premiership final, and air a weekly highlights show.
The deal takes effect this month and will run until the end of the 2023-24 season.

Inflation at 7.5% RPI. If Sky/BT bung in those sort of price rises the decision by the EPL to roll over the Premiership rights and not stick it to an auction looks quite flawed. Unless of course there really was nobody out there interested.

Three years is a long time time to have rolled them over for.

At the time EPL took that decision there was a great deal of uncertainty due to Covid.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing - I would imagine they also took into account the fact BT were pulling back from buying rights.

3 years is the standard term for EPL rights in UK

I would have favoured extending them for a couple of years max to get more clarity during the fog of Covid but three years seems a bit excessive.

I did caveat my post with a big “unless”

If there were realistically “big pockets” streamers out there, yes. But if not…
If there were concerns about bidding at the same time as other rights a one year rollover and a five year auction to get back “on track” for 3 year auctions would have been interesting. Five years takes away the problem Setanta and ESPN had of quickly having the rug pulled from under them by Sky and BT before relatively establishing their business model. Something that no doubt puts any prospective bidders off.
DAZN might just hand BT 530 million reasons proving my point.
