Re: The Paralympics 2012 Thread

I wonder if they will be as quick to award him a knighthood as they do for able bodied athletes.

Sarah Storey has won 11 gold medals at the age of 34 and why has she not been made a Dame, did Lord Coe win 11 gold medals, no only 4.

Well Sarah Storey did not win all her 11 golds in this olympics but it seems that being disabled prevents you from getting a top honour.

bit of a sweeping statement..After all what about Sir Philip Craven who gave the speech to open and close the Paralympics.

Very few and far between and somehow you would expect 11 gold medals to account for something considering we have awarded knighthoods to Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Chris Hoy who have won half as much, the disabled athletes just get paid lip service in the main unlike our able bodied athletes, double standards anyone.

BBC
Quote:
Britain's Olympians and Paralympians are to get their own honours list, rather than simply being included in the New Year's Honours.
Also, whilst it is wrong they are not honoured in the same way and to the same extent as the Olympians, it is not "few and far between" - nearly half of the Beijing Paralympians received honours in 2009 - Telegraph

The fact that back in Coe's day and beyond, disabled athletes didn't the recognition they deserved and that now there'll be a honours list specifically for our tremendous Olympic/Paralympic competitors is surely evidence of how much perceptions have changed as a result of what's been achieved during London 2012.

It's a very great shame that the show has finally come to an end but today there'll be a huge procession in London for all those who made London 2012 the amazing spectacle it was and I have no doubt the disabled participants will be cheered just as loudly (if not more) than their abled bodied counterparts. Perhaps that's the most amazing thing of all. My eldest will be there with countless thousands of others celebrating their efforts and success.

I don't think I could be prouder of what's been achieved in London and all those who made it happen in spite of the protracted torrent of doom, gloom, doubt and criticism they were subjected to by much of the media in the run up!

Re: The Paralympics 2012 Thread

We won tickets for the Ladies Goal Ball bronze place (Sweden vs Finland) and final (Japan vs China). What a great day out. We had to pay train fares into London and snacks at the site but that was it.

The volunteers were superb, from arriving at Waterloo and guided to the best tube line and where to get off to those at the site. It helped being a nice sunny day too. The police were smiling and the atmosphere was great.

My son had recently had a cast off after breaking a foot bone earlier in summer and we were able to rent (free) a wheel chair. This helped us get around and also bypass some queues; "special accessible entrance this way".

So well done to loads of people.
