I think it's more about preparation and mental focus/fatigue. If they had the chance to rest some players more or take a breather during the games then it wouldn't be so bad but instead they don't the time to have a single lapse of concentration and then when they finally hear the final whistle they have to throw themselves into the next game at the same intensity.
It's exhausting to be 100% focused on something with such intensity and to do that twice a week. Just think of it like a work or school task when it dominates your time and then as soon as it's done you need to reach that level again? You can only do it for so long. This is a much more extreme version of that.
Barcelona and Munich can go into some games pretty much on autopilot. Do their thing and get three points and not worry really about the other team. PL teams can't.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
No disrespect to Olympiakos but even a makeshift Arsenal XI shouldn't be losing, weekend game or not. Besides Bayern in Europe, they appear to be a bit of a bogey team. 3 wins and 3 losses on a quick count.
Quick fun fact though, I believe out of all the English teams to play Olympiakos in European football, Newcastle United are the only ones to hold a 100% record against them, First time we played them I attended, Alan Shearer scored way back in 2004/2005 I believe...Aaaand I've just broken my own heart
If any club wishes to swap places we'd be delighted to crash out of the Champions League in your place, what I'd give for European nights like these again. The old Uefa cup that is and The Champions League, Europa League is dire.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
Which calls for rethinking how the competition is approached. Arsenal even with changes only play one way. Actually its that or sit back as a unit. Can Arsenal stand tall and play off whats infront of them turning it on now and then? Man Utd will do exactly that on Sunday, stand tall and pick them off because the sides naive.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
That is the overall problem with Arsenal imo, everybody knows the way Wenger likes them to play. It hasn't changed for seasons now, so everybody has a tactic ready for playing Arsenal. I won't be shocked if there is another 6-2 win for United on Sunday.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
Speaking on assumption and probability here, Arsenal have pretty much a mountain to climb and still need results to go in their favour from here on in.
If you get nothing from two games against Bayern you'd have to consider that it?
Iker Casillas though, 152 Champions League games, 3 times a winner and the youngest ever Champions League final goalkeeper

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
To basically go out after two games is shocking because they won't get nothing against the mighty Bayern so they are out in my book.

Sorry but most of us would like to play twice a week for the money they get so l think that's a poor excuse to say they can't cope with it as English teams coped with it 30 to 40 years ago quite easily.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
Think the point Damien was making was the quality of the teams they're playing at the weekend is significantly increasing when compared to I.E Leicester 5 years ago.
You'd expect them to be able to play 2 games a week easily, a lot of people make that statement, a lot of people also miss out training. We all seem to forget they do a 9-5 like most of us but with physical training.
Still shouldn't be losing to Olympiakos regardless

Are we all ready for another night of Champions League humiliation?.

What's Rooney on again? Surely he's a player you have to be looking to get off the books now.

Re: Football Season 2015/2016
The assist from Mata for our second goal was quite brilliant. Thats what happens when he gets into more central positions rather than out on the wing.

On the tram going home from Old Trafford, not the best of games but a win is all that matters. The ref was a joke most of the yellow cards he gave United were not even fouls. All those cards could come back to haunt them. Still it's Manchester 2 Germany nil, are you watching London.

Not the ones who attend Old Trafford, a higher percentage of season ticket holders from Mcr post codes that City for a start., but who am I to bother trying to dispel myths.

I assume you mean Arsenal alone? given that Chelsea are also on 3 points after 2 games with a higher goal difference, sorry Arsenal
