-- "The Punisher" Andrew Martin did a post on his MySpace page in which he defends the usage of steroids in professional wrestling. He says that they're mostly for cosmetic reasons and compares them to a facelift or botox. However, he says that it's wrong for athletes in other sports to use them because steroids give them a competitive edge. He also mentions TNA at the end of his post by saying, "Don't forget to watch TNA at 9pm eastern time on spike, you will be pleasantly surprised to see how far this company has grown and will continue to do so or you could always watch the same guys I watched when I was a kid doing the same boring story lines. TNA TNA TNA????" You can read the post in its entirety at profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=743 9092.
The myspace link just seems to go to his latest (and sadly last) myspace entry, but as you can see from that there, he advocated steroid use in pro wrestling and likened it to actors and actresses getting cosmetic surgery to secure movie roles.

I still don't believe he was on them during his TNA and final WWE run though.

It might get someone noticed but if they can't work and don't get over then a ripped physique gets you nowhere, just look at Lex Luger in the 90s, a body that looks like it was carved from granite but he couldn't work to save his life.

Re: WWE
Russ, i thought the reason Lex Lugers career went down the pan was to do with Drugs especially Steroid abuse.

Re: WWE
That didn't stop him being a multi-time WCW champion and joint Royal Rumble winner though, did it?
Which is exactly my point. The big guys always get over in the eyes of management because at the end of the day the average wrestling fan wants to see two monsters go at it. If every match featured guys like Jamie Noble versus Crash Holly (rest his soul), while the real fans would enjoy the skill involved and the creativity, the average fan, who makes up a large percentage of the fanbase of the industry, would find it boring and tedious.
And it's still a business at the end of the day.

I can name a ton of guys who are exactly like that in the industry right now who are or have been champions at one time. Khali is a great example of a guy who was clearly only given the belt because he's over 7ft and weighs 400 pounds of pure muscle. I'm not saying Khali roided up at any point (it's always possible though), but he can't "wrestle" to save his life. He lumbers around like a giraffe on stilts that can't bend it's legs and performs the most basic of moves, yet Vince McMahon put the world title on his shoulder the same way he did for a bunch of other talentless guys. Hell, it's only been in the last year or two that Batista has even been worth watching, yet he's a multi-time world champion too.

Re: WWE
That's exactly the point I'm making - if you can't work then you won't last. Sure Vince gives the big guys a try but the fans aren't stupid. Khali is possibly the worst wrestler ever in the history of WWE but his size got him his chance. He's not that much bigger than Big Show but what a contract in styles, one can work, the other can't.
Similar issue with the Ultimate Warrior. Amazing physique, bags of charisma but he only knew about 5 moves and eventually he dropped the belt and they had no plans to put it on him again.
Being big will get you a chance but if you can't work (Luger, Warrior, Khali etc) then the fans will see through it and even though Vince marks out for the big guys, he's not stupid enough to give the fans a product they don't want. I'm not saying big equates to being a bad worker (Lesnar, Batista, Big Show, 'Taker, Kane etc etc) but having nothing other than size doesn't get you very far.

Re: WWE
Oh I agree completely, but a lot of these guys are seeing steroids as a way of being given a chance. They think that if they bulk up and look bigger, it'll be a way into something bigger for them career-wise and financially, which is a real shame as we all know the side effects of such things.
Whether they make the most of the chance after they're given it is usually down to the ability of the person in question. I always considered Test to be an extremely talented guy, perhaps even capable of a world title run, and he had the look about him to be versatile as both a heel and face, especially during the whole Test vs HHH and Stephanie thing. Given a proper push he could have gone on to be a main eventer. Just a shame it didn't work out that way.

Re: WWE
The Rock Says There's No Question He's Retired
Dwayne “The Rock†Johnson spoke with Moviefone.com recently and was asked when the last time he performed The People’s Elbow was. The Rock replied with this:
“There was a considerable amount of alcohol involved … [Laughs] No, honestly the last time I did that was in Madison Square Garden five years ago. I’ve retired — that was my very last match. What a perfect place to end my career, in Madison Square Garden. I had the best time within that five or six year period, creating that character. There’s nothing like performing in front of a live audience and the energy and adrenaline rush that I got. Being in that world provided me with really invaluable experience in terms of entertaining an audience.â€

Steroids And Prescription Drugs Found In The Apartment Of Andrew "Test" Martin
http://rajah.com/base/node/15442
I guess that answers that question...
Still a damn shame, was watching some vids on Youtube from Test's early run as well as his ECW on Sci-Fi run, I'd forgotten how good he actually was.

Don't trust Wiki all the time but this seems pretty solid.
Quote:
In 2007, Doll was hospitalized after having a seizure related to an intestinal blockage. He underwent surgery, and had been placed on life support. On March 22, 2009, Doll died after his family decided to remove him from his ventilator.
