Red Cadeaux had to settle for second once again as Fiorente claimed the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

Ed Dunlop's charge, who had to contend with a high draw, was poised on the outside of the field turning for home, but Fiorente was tracking him and the pair really started to battle with a furlong to run, with Damien Oliver launching Gai Waterhouse's charge on the outside.

While Red Cadeaux responded to Gerald Mosse's every urging, Fiorente just had too much in reserve and edged in front at the line.

Damn those dastardly Australians have pipped us again.

Flemenstar appears set to make his debut for Tony Martin in Sunday's Boylesports.com Fortria Chase at Navan.

One of the stars of the last National Hunt season when trained by Peter Casey, he was moved to Martin by his owner, Stephen Curran, who felt he would benefit from a change of routine having ended his campaign as a sick horse at Aintree.

Somersby grimly held on from Module in a thrilling finish to Exeter's BetVictor Haldon Gold Cup in which last year's winner Cue Card was third.

Sent off a well-backed 9-2 chance (from 7-1), Somersby travelled supremely well for Dominic Elsworth and was in front at the third-last. The weight began to tell on Cue Card by that stage, but Module was a persistent threat in the straight, for which he deserves great credit after an early mistake.

Ed Dunlop has still not ruled out Red Cadeaux returning for a fourth attempt at winning the Emirates Melbourne Cup after his epic second-placed finish at Flemington on Tuesday.

The Newmarket trainer was glowing with pride for his seven-year-old, who also filled the runner-up spot in 2011 but shook off concerns about his big weight and form to finish just three-quarters of a length behind Fiorente.
