Then leave and go to a country that you think is better.
As for blame we should be looking at companies running the trains and asking them WHY they do not have the kit to clear up the snow. They make enough money out of us so they should invest some of it to keep there service running.

Re: Snow !
I personally am not blaming the goverment for the trains. The buses, however, while privately run, cannot apparently run if the roads are icy (although, oddly, they had no trouble before privatisation) and the local council and/or government are responsible for gritting those roads.

Re: Snow !
Each year when we get bad weather, this country grinds to a halt for days, airports, railways, and the motorways get stuck and millions of pounds is lost, staff cannot get into work etc..
Can anyone name a country that gets bad weather and stay's in trouble for the same length of time ?

Re: Snow !
Why oh why do people insist on comparing the UK with the US?
New York / Washington etc always get tons of snow each year and almost every house will have snow shovels and snow blowers, and local councils have the equipment on standby.
If we weren't protected by the gulf stream we would get the same amount of snow.
So please, please stop going on about it.

The point I was making was that that the Eastern US was dumped with an exceptional amount of snow, recently - as, in proportion, were we in the UK.
- neither country can claim they 'took it in their stride' - even with the extra equipment available in the US?
- the key phrase being 'in proportion' - I totally agree a direct comparison isn't realistic

It wasn't aimed at you, but at those that always say that a country that always get bad weather and the equipment for it clear up quicker than us who don't get bad weather that often, and as such dont spend the cash on stuff that would sit in a garage and slowly rust.

Re: Snow !
Haven't read more than the last 6 posts but, imho it's ridiculous, the news reports ( if you believe the figures ) say that we were losing around a billion a day in lost revenue across the country, it's sounds a lot but thats media hype, ok, so say it's half that, so we lose a half billion pounds a day due to snow, surely it makes sense, both economical and social to have better / more resources available, or am I being stupid ?

Re: Snow !
It's a lot of nonsense. Much of that demand for goods and services doesn't go away just because of the weather and will be made up in the coming weeks as people get back to their desks and work on the backlog.

So where do they get their figures from ? the demand for goods and services ? do you mean like food / fuel etc, i know you live in the sticks, and it must be pretty isolated, iirc, you work from home, I imagine then you have a healthy stocked larder, down here, in big old Stockton, we were running low on basics like bread, milk and petrol, to try and get through " the coming weeks " as you say. It's only since today that the roads have really been ok to drive, where you could see the road and not have to guess ( only a slight exaggeration there as well )
So no, imho, we are not prepared and we should be, after year upon year of it, too hot, too cold, not enough........ you get my point, we as a country, are a joke when it comes to weather, and being prepared for it, why.... government /s not wanting to spend money.
