3com and xtreme pipex setup failure

help, i dont know if anyone would be kind enough to have a look at my problem and maybe have an idea how to solve it.
i bought a 3com router for my home pc. i contacted my isp, pipex for any settings for connecting, i have an existing connection via external broadband modem...this is disconnected prior to installation of the router.
as instructed i connected the router, succesfully mananged to connect to the 3com setup pages, i could see all the correct green lights illuminated, and a connected status of 100 mpbs..this was it i thought !!
sadly not , whilst the data was inputted and saved, i was unable to connect to a web site via my browser, i kept getting the same error.
so i rebooted and reset the connections, each time i get as far as saving the settings with 3com..but never to open a web page..any thoughts would be really welcome.
12 hours down the drain and a lot of frustration as the 3com help desk wasnt available at the weekend
