On the look for router

Discovered my Belkin only sports a 10Mbs WAN connection and thus found my 8Mbs bottlencek on my XL package; so been on the lookout for routers with a 100Mbs socket. Having a bit of trouble finding ones with such, or with specs which actually detail the WAN port quantitively, rather than just labelling it Fast Internet.

So was wondering if anyone has a suitable router which supports the XL WAN speed? Will be searching in the interim, just thought I'd ask in case anybody using one already and could recommend it.

I gave up on Commercial routers and built one of these. Much better at handling large downloads from any of the main P2P type programme's and it uses MRTG so you can track how much you have downloaded through the cable modem.

The main points are that it uses 10/100 lan cards so is more than capable of handling anything that Virgin throws at it for now.

Any old pc will do from a 386 to a pent 4. When it is up and running no keyboard , mouse, monitor are needed.

Very intersting Solution, Bill, thanks. May have a use for my old Cyrixx II powered Book PC yet either that or the old celeron machine.

I use a Linksys WRT54GS which copes well with 20 Mbps and would recommend over the Netgear I used to have (the latter seemed to need rebooting quite often).

it would be nice if i could also find a ready made liveCD with NAS and 2x1Gigabit basic bonding included.

if he's going to buy any non cheap commercial router today its probably better to get a 1Gig router anyway to allow growth later.

on the face of it, it seems to cover what your after and more so perhaps yes, i cant say for sure as i dont know it.

or if theres a 3rd party firmware to increase the options you might want to add later, do a search and see, but that first link says Operating System : Linux so thats a good indication it might.

obviously the 1 gig WAN will be half asleep with even the 20Mbit connection but your wired LAN will benefit greatly with some cheap 1gig network cards installed and pluged into this or something like it.
