And how else do you punish the team? The car and
it's performance were illegal during the qualifying phase. Any other sort of punishment would give rise to all sorts of illegal changes that would be brushed aside.
If in a horse race, the horse was found to have been doped, the horse's place in that race is removed from any result. The jockey benefited from any improvement in the horse's performance.
If anything, Hamilton should be banned from the race itself, as the car didn't complete the
qualifying phase in a lawful manner.
