The background to the story they want to tell makes it contemporary to the original Rebus novel, Knots and Crosses, although they are apparently writing an entirely new story.
The hack reporting for Variety says he’s been demoted to Det. Sgt. so probably doesn’t know that when we first meet Rebus in the novels he’s a DS, not a DI.
If they’re starting out with a young DS Rebus they may hopefully be wanting to make multiple series.
