Funny you should say that -- it has always been "hacked" by the use of an attachable drive in the far east. However, not only has there been several decent games recently, but also massive promotional work from EA and several limited edition bundles, which always increase sales (e.g. Zelda). It is good that Nintendo have these franchises as they really do appeal to those without and given the relative cheapness of the machine, who can say no?

Back onto "hacked" -- you can't actually do anything with a "hacked" 'cube except extract the image of certain discs. They are "playable" (term used loosly, because they aren't really) on an emulator, but the disc is propriatory and a duplicate can't be written. Although, that being said, one can extract the music from most discs (e.g. F-Zero, R:Racing Evolution).
