The S3 has Samsung customisations. Just as HTC phones have HTC changes and Sony phones have Sony changes - so new versions of Android take longer to arrive.

Other brands like samsung like to customise the updates or include a few updates of their own before releasing it. Then it is down to virgin/Three/vodaphone etc to push it out to its customers

On a side note my new Nexus is fanbloodytastic ,first smart phone i have had and already it has proved invaluable in a practical way .....and no i don't use it for facebook or twitter
