Back in the day when there were no engine controls, teams had FP engines, qualifying engines and race engines.
They could use a brand-new engine per race, and the perfect engine would break at the finish line, otherwise it carried too much weight and could cost them the race.
The Qualifying engines had little or no cooling to save on weight.
