There have been occasions when it moved much faster than that, similar to the speeds now, but that was the result of a dramatic change. One of them was the event that killed off the dinosaurs. These were, geologically speaking, 'sudden' events caused by some incident that dramatically changed the climate. We're in another event now but there hasn't been a huge incident, there has just been us.
