ASUS RT-AC66U and TP-LINK’s TL-WDN3200 N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter

Can someone answer a strange question.

Windows wireless manager will not detect the ASUS 5Ghz channel broadcasting.

I downloaded the latest chipset drivers for the USB adapter from RAlink and the built in software detects the 5Ghz and connects fine, im actually posting from the connection now.

So anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

What OS is Windows running? If 8.1 that might be the problem, I have an Asus USB-New which connects to my Asus RT-N66U Router.

This worked perfect on the 5GHz network under Windows 8, but when I updated to 8.1 the 5GHz was not accessible.

IIRC it was a driver issue as Windows was wasn'the using the correct driver despite me telling it to. I did get a work around and I will have a look tomorrow.

It might not help fully but point you to a solution.

1) What channel is it on?
2) Does it detect any other 5Ghz broadcasts?
3) Are you using the latest drivers from the manufacturer?

Channel is set to auto

Windows does detect other 5G around it as there is listed 2 x 5G VM Hubs

Im using the latest drivers from RAlink\Mediatek for the chipset of the device as the manufacturer drivers are years old and thats what i was using thinking it was a problem and updated to newest drivers.

Im running windows 7x64 Professional

As i said its just the windows wireless that doesnt find the 5G, the medialink software detects it instantly as 5G/Ac

I didn't ask how the channel is set, I asked what channel is it on.

Does it show up if you turn off the 2.4Ghz wireless (On the router)?

Channel set to auto means by default it will choose the best channel based on surrounding routers/networks.

As i said its set on auto so it will connect on different channels.

If u switch off 2.4Ghz on router it doesnt show on the windows list but the 5Ghz does show and can connect on the RAlink\Mediatek software.

Not that it matters now but as I said I don't care what it's set to. I asked what channel it is operating on. Auto is not a channel.

Explain that again... 5Ghz does show if you turn off 2.4Ghz? Where?

You can connect to it using the Mediatek software? With or without turning off 2.4?

i am connected currently on channel 1 2.4Ghz.

If i turn the radio off for 2.4Ghz in the Router settings but only on mediatek software and not on the windows list. Windows list will not show the Asus 5Ghz AC.

Yes i can connect to 5Ghz if 2.4Ghz is on or off using The Mediatek software.

Do you have a smartphone?

If so there is an app called Wifi Analyzer.

This will allow to to see what channels neighbours are using, this app supports both 2.4GHz & 5GHz, if any neighbour is using a channel you could change from auto to another channel.

I do have a smartphone but it only works and detects networks on 2.4Ghz band.

The only thing I can think of is the SSID might be hidden.

Just look in my routers setting under WAN>Dual WAN there is an option to turn on Dual Wan support.

Is this option selected?

Re: ASUS RT-AC66U and TP-LINK’s TL-WDN3200 N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter

no its not selected.

I can't believe its been staring at me in the face all along!

For some reason when i did the last firmware update the SSID for 5Ghz became exactly the same as the 2.4Ghz where in previous firmwares it was named ASUS_5G and not just ASUS as the 2.4Ghz is.

So ive found the problem thanks for the help everyone.
