The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Just revealed in a trailer today.
http://www.theverge.com/games/2016/1...railer-release Looks like a home console that can be removed to continue playing on the go or a weird tablet that docks to become a home console, with the controller being able to split and attach to either side of the tablet. Then can be used seperatly for multiplayer gaming. Games look like they will be digital or on memory cards. Seems pretty powerful and this time has the backing of big game makers like EA. Due for release in March. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
Essentially a modular console, removes itself to become a 'DS' albeit as powerful as an Nvidia Shield allowing AAA titles. If they can keep the cost decent it'll do really well.
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
It will be powered by a custom Tegra processor from Nvidia, which apparently is as powerful as its top line GPUs. So if it can run Sky Rim and others then it could be very good indeed.
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
Nintendo 101. How to create something that neither PC gamers or console gamers can complain about. This should appeal to both sides. I'm interested. I'd like one..
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
The problem with something like this is that its neither one thing or another. As a tablet, will it do everything an iPad/Android Tab/Surface will do? As a console will it have the power to compete with XBone or the PS4?
Also, Nintendo do seem to struggle to appeal to your "big spender" 20-something "bloke" market, and the games they're showing in the trailer do seem to look like they'll be aimed at the current WiiU market rather than expanding. Also, who launches a console like this in February/March? I'd have thought a launch in July/August would have been more likely, with a publicity drive up towards Christmas. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
I think without seeing the full system specs it is hard to tell, however going by the Tegra X1 or X2 and it being apparently powerful I would say it may possibly have power close to that of the X1 as the Wii U was actually pretty capable and was somewhere between the 360 and X1 in terms of graphics.
I look forward to it. Nintendo always being inovative or gimmicky as some would say. Glad they didn't go the VR route though. A lottle bit of info on the Nvidia blog https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/1...ntendo-switch/ Quote:

Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
pretty expensive l would say compared to other consoles....
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
It'll drop quite quickly anyway. I reckon 220-250 is pretty reasonable. I am assuming the modular section can be recharged on the go though and not need to be docked? Would be a killer for me if it required you to take the docking section everywhere.
The idea is its ideal for me at work and for travelling, the TV use would be minimal. I see it as a better supported Nvidia shield. Launch titles mean I won't be in a hurry but we'll start seeing popular ports soon enough. I'd be after Mario Kart though and that Mario 64 lookalike in NYC. Leave it to Nintendo to once again pull out a wildcard in a dull generation of consoles. Reckon they'll continue with DS devices or are we in for a merge fairly soon? The ability to play DS titles on this would be amazing. Much like Xbox Live has XBLA titles. What about DS titles on the Nintendo store? |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
Yes it will charge via USB-C
I like the idea that I can take it to work and sit on on my desk and play or get some multi player game on the go while on lunch. Or I can actually sit in the living room while the wife watches TV and still be able to play my console without having to go to an other room. Yes the Wii U can technically do this but on a much smaller poorer quality screen. I don't think its expensive Den, its a launch price and if you look at most consoles their launch prices are always pretty high. I think its a great idea for a console and really the next step, taking a home console and making it fully portable. Wish they had actually revealed the system specs though. Or even shown off the UI. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX)
USB-C, done deal then for me. Nintendo tearing it up again :D
It'll be 200 with launch titles by Christmas anyway with Bundles at about £250. Be matching Xbox One original and PS4 Original all the way whereas Scorpio Xbox One will be near £500 if not more. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
The IR sensor on the Joycon looks pretty interesting as does the HD rumble. There is also an NFC reader on the right controller for the Amiibo figures.
I love Nintendo trying new things and always being brave and not just doing what every other console does, yes it doesn't always work but they still try. |

Just seen that some specs have been confirmed.
It will have 32GB internal Memory, expandable with Micro SD Cards. The screen is finally a capacitive multitouch screen at 6.2 Inches and resolution of 1280x720 Dual speakers on the bottom and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
I've preordered one in case but I think I'll hold off buying until the Mario games arrive.
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
A friend was at the event in London today and got some some hands on with it.
He loved Zelda and said it looked amazing. The console supports micro SD cards up to 256gb. The console in handheld mode feels good and not too heavy. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
The only real issue I can think of is the online service, if it's anything like the previous ones then it really isn't worth any form of my compensation. But it's not really part of anything I need regardless so doesn't affect anything.
http://imgur.com/ZQSvAd1 This is worth my compensation though. |

Exactly.
Although I really want Bomberman R as well. Oh and Sonic Mania. I will be happy with them. Neo Geo games are going to be on the Virtual Console as well. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Release Goldeneye on it and I'll buy it in a heartbeat
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Nintendo have released more specs and info via their official site, although the CPU/GPU is still just listed as a customised NVIDIA Tegra chip.
Think we will need to wait for release and then a tear down to confirm actual chip and system RAM. |

Anyone got one?
Still just waiting till more games appear, but it's still on my list as a buy. I don't like Zelda for those wondering why I haven't just upped and got one already. Never have. Love anything Mario though. ---------- Post added at 18:28 ---------- Previous post was at 18:25 ---------- Quote:
By the end of it's lifespan it'll have outsold the PS4 and Xbox One, the price will continue to drop significantly and with both Microsoft and Sony pushing 'Elite' consoles or upgrades as they're calling them for ridiculous prices, Nintendo will actually be undercutting both. As said earlier, this will just continue to drop in price. There will be a massive drop off when both the PS4 pro and Xbox Scorpio go head to head at which point the cheaper Nintendo Switch will gain massive figures over the other two. Right now, it's PS4/Xbox One/Wii U, in which the PS4 leads significantly. Both will see a drop off when the upgraded versions start competing and become the premium consoles. It'll be Nintendo Switch/PS4pro/Scorpio from December onwards. That's where the switch will start outselling the other two significantly. It was expected to ship 5 million by December, it's currently averaging close to double that amid massive sell outs world wide, not to say it'd still sell more than the expected amount though. That's with it's very limited titles, expect that to spike again when Mario Kart bundles drop. I don't disagree about the price, I just think this will drop like the Wii did and constantly undercut the other two on it's way to being the underdog winner. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Sorry adzii but it has no chance of outselling the other two...
|
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Yeah, neither did the Wii, £250 console and years later and it's sitting massively above both the Xbox 360 and PS3. The £400 PS4 Pro and the £500 Scorpio leaves Nintendo looking great with a mere £250 price tag, that'll drop to £200 relatively quick. Come Christmas they'll be flying along and by the time the generation ends they'll have overtaken both competitors.
It's the same silly mistake both Sony and Microsoft made last time, more Sony though, it's going to be a direct battle between the three and right now, a Pro retails for £350 gameless.. the Scorpio nearer £500, the switch will tap massively into this and we'll have another Wii scenario unfold. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Perhaps you need to look at Nintendo's last console which was well and truly a utter flop.

It was mid ranged console priced the same as a high end console, I mean you couldn't even get it for less than £250 without games, it wasn't just a pricing failure, they'd removed everything that made the Wii good too. Disaster ensued, mistakes were learned from and they've returned with a console the same price as a Wii with great specs. They're competing in two markets, this will phase out the DS and become the premier handheld gaming device too. Price is the premier factor. PS3 was the most expensive, it sold the least, the Xbox 360 in second being cheaper and the Wii up top being the cheapest. Currently it's the PS4 leading, Xbox One second and the Wii U last. The ps4 being the cheapest when you take into account the launch price of the Wii U vs the PS4 specs, in which the PS4 was on top by a mile, in reality you were paying for that silly tablet controller. Come Switch vs PS4 pro vs Scorpio, I believe it'll be Switch, as it's the cheapest and more marketable, the PS4 pro, being the second cheapest and already on sale, then the Scorpio, which will likely only sell to dedicated gamers. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Well we shall see adzii.:)

Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
The only questionable thing is the launch date, it makes no sense. If they'd waited to perfect more launch titles and riled people up, generating hype, it'd launch even better. They've got to tap into what they potentially have too. Offer downloadable DS games at reduced prices and you'll lap up sales. So much opportunity here to take.

Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
I think it launched when it did due to the coming end of the financial year.
Personally don't have one yet as a trip to NYC in less than 10 days, but will be picking one up in April. a friend has one and its a really smart bit of kit, very solid and well built. Quality is really spot on. yes there is a lack of launch titles but there are over 80 due by the end of the year I am sure. As well as the retail titles there are a few more digital only games on the store just now. sadly the virtual console wasn't ready for launch either but after that launches it will be fantastic being able to take a fully fledged home console on the move and play games like zelda and Skyrim on the go not to mention all the classic NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube and Wii games on the go. I think the console will sell by the bucket load, its already sold a lot this weekend. Price wise its a great price for what it is and of course all tech and games consoles are expensive to start with. Look at the 3DS XL it still costs about £200 |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Don't stick any decals on the Switch as it does something nasty to the plastic.

I can't decide if I should get a Switch now and play Zelda or get Zelda for the Wii U and wait for more games on the Switch. HELP!

Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is out April 28th.
Also Fast RMX is great if you enjoy racing games. There are actually quite a few games in the estore. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Isn't Mario Kart 8 deluxe the same as the Wii U version? Only tempting thing is the portability I think...

The problem with going for that market is that for future generations of the console, you have to persuade them to upgrade. They aren't gamers. They aren't interested in having the most powerful console or the best graphics. As long as they can play their games, they are happy. Nintendo made the mistake of assuming that the Wii sold well purely because it's unique controller and games, so they tried to build on that controller. The DS was successful so they thought the Dual Screen thing was working. So, they thought "Why not give the Wii Mote a screen?". The problem is the Wii U controller added a massive cost to the console, when Sony and Microsoft could include most of it's functionality in a Tablet or Phone app for a fraction of the cost. This has severely hampered Nintendo's ability to lower the price of the Wii U (which, frankly, they needed to). Nintendo actually don't have a great record when it comes to selling home (ie non portable) consoles. They've released a lot, but the only ones that really did well are the NES, the SNES and Wii. I think financially, they've been using their pocket console sales to subsidise the rest of the company. I actually think the Switch can succeed. It seems a good console, but I think they need to drop the prices now. It's more expensive than either the PS4 or XBox one, but does not have anywhere near the number of titles either had at launch, and the mobile gaming market is nowhere near as big as it was. What makes me sad about this is I think Nintendo need it to succeed (why else would they have rushed out the Mini NES and Mini Famicom just before Christmas if not to give themselves a quick boost of cash), and I am not sure it will. |

Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
They did relatively well in their own way but overall were destroyed by both the PS1 and PS2 over those two generations, don't think there's an argument to be had there, we all surely owned both and we'll likely all conclude they were two of the best if not the best consoles ever made.
I'd put the game cube down in the Xbox category for that era, the xbox was massively impressive but came too late to dent anyone significant and both released after the PS2 was heavily established by it's first year of sales (The Xbox came even later). The N64 is a cult console for me bundled with classic games that are unforgettable. At the end of it though, I owned all five of these consoles and I'd love to be back in that era of gaming. The hours spent playing GoldenEye split screen with that Golden gun, the release of San Andreas on the PS2 was monumental. The Switch will gain that same effect as the Wii come the holiday season, the vastly more expensive upgrades of the PS4 and Xbox One will boost the Switch and as before, this is essentially that new DS too so they're playing two markets here. I don't own a Wii U either so getting a Mario Kart port is a non issue for me. As above though, the amount sold doesn't always mean a better all round system. Frankly there's been plenty of truly awesome gaming systems. The Genesis/Megadrive (II), NES, SNES, Xbox, PS1/2, Xbox 360, N64, Gamecube. They all had different reasons for being great systems too, although exclusives were a telling factor in all of those it becomes heavily exclusive based as we move into the 360/PS3 and upwards. Why did the PS1/2 easily smash 100+ million? Gotta take everything into consideration here and just say it, Game piracy boosted the sales of both Sony consoles. It's still a factor today, it isn't as big but it's a part of decision making when it comes to consoles. The DS didn't just sell well because it was handheld, it also sold because R4 cards exist for the device. Especially parents buying said devices for the younger generation that lack the interest of online play. (Self DRM came with Xbox live essentially) If you wanted to play online you had little other choice than to legitimately purchase the game. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Nintendo Switch is outselling what the Wii sold and there's waiting lists in places. Nintendo are still struggling to keep up with demand despite doubling output.
Metroid Prime 4 announced, Rocket league to be ported over too. Rocket League is a global phenomenon right now so that made sense. |
Re: The Nintendo Switch(NX) - release date 3rd March 2017
Also a Pokemon rpg is in development but about 12+ months away.
Mario Odessey, which looks awesome will be out in October this year. A new Kirby and a new Yoshi game also coming. |

Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy more Switch controllers.
Tesco are selling a pack for £30 in many stores across the country, this is one hell of a bargain as Amazon are selling them for £65. |

Not that price in my local store.
I need a new right joy con as it won't stay slotted in to console as the little clip is broke. Sounds like it happens a lot. |

Got on last Monday with Link's Awakening, it's a much more pocketable version of the Switch and doesn't connect to a TV. I love it and got it in turquoise. |
