Three New Star Wars Films Announced
 

Lucasfilm has announced three new live-action films.

One will "tell the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harness it as a liberating power in an era of chaos and oppression", the second is about "the escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic" and will "close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series".

The final film will take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and feature Daisy Ridley returning in the role of Rey and will "tell the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down".

Superb. The first film could become the basis for a new film series (or TV shows). The origins of Sith and Jedi are there to be explored. I like the idea of a film to tie up the New Republic stuff as well. I’d also like to understand where the New Order came from but it is difficult for them to tell stories in that era now because the heroes of the original trilogy ought to be involved and that would no longer be possible without re-casting, which might be controversial.

I think I am happiest of all about the new Daisy Ridley film. The end of the Rise of Skywalker was just so tantalising with her standing there in front of the binary sunset. There has to be more to her story and I’m glad we get to find out what it is.

Ill stay with the original 3 movies which nothing can touch them!!

I agree - I saw part IV in South Africa in the cinema when it first came out and just the effect of that puts it as my favourite.
You watch the ads, B movie, news reels (2 of them, one bilingual), more ads, trailers. Then the lights dim right down, curtains fully retract, silence. Then on the screen the long ago in a galaxy far, far away then that music and the film burst on the screen. No 5 minutes of characters, producers, studios, editors, just straight into the film.

Makes me sad how ruined that movie was..........

I mean many of us love the 3 original analogue movies and in 1997 they all went to crap!! (Those of us like purity)

It took me awhile but I finally have all 3 original movies in thier original formats!

2) Star wars II (1980) - I have this recored off analogue cable sometime I think in the late 80s

3) Star wars III (1983) - I found this at salvation army -- Its recorded from HBO I think sometime in the 80s......

I would love to get all 3 on thier offical tapes but the other 2 have been DIGTIALLY MASTERED and to me do not look good....... (Sound thinner)

What pi$$es me off is NONE OF THE VIDEODISCS have been digtially affected at all..... You can get Part 2 and 3 in thier original analogue beauty!! (I dont have a videodisc player sadly)

I kinda would love to have CED and be able to see ALL 3 as I did in the 80s on analogue cable!!

Yes the untouched originals were good at the time. However over many years as technology improved its now possible to get those original films digitally remastered with colour correction and some little issues with effects fixed thanks to fan dedication. There are the 4k despecialised editions which keep all the good things about digital images and have removed all the added cgi scenes and pointless changes.

But I'm also lucky to still own the original Laserdisc boxset with all 3 as released in cinemas. I also have the special editions from 1997 and the old released VHS versions. However when comparing them the older VHS tapes have severe colour degradation and many things are the wrong colour or are very off. Simply the more the masters were reprinted and copied the worse they got.

Some fans even managed to get original 35mm film and scanned and remastered them over a long period of time.

LOL that Dude thinks VHS (whether shop-bought or recorded off cable TV) is ‘original format’.

Star Wars was shot on 35mm film with prints for theatrical release having a screen resolution broadly equivalent to 2K digital. Obviously analogue film doesn’t have pixels and the sharpness of the final image is all part of the art and chemistry of analogue photography.

Exactly. When you buy a retail VHS it's already likely 3-4 print away from the original negative and reduced quality. At least with Digital every copy made of it is identical.

What a tape looked like on your TV also heavily depended on the quality of your TV and VHS player as well as the cables between them. Not to mention every play of the tape wears it down so will get worse over time. I love my Laserdisc for nostalgia but the picture quality is pretty terrible by modern standards.

Then again digital formats heavily depend on the bit rate and resolution they are played at.

I'm open to new Star Wars films as long as they are interesting and open the world more. Exploring more eras and parts of the galaxy. That's why the Acolyte series is very appealing to me. An as yet unseen period on screen.

That's how 4k or Ultra HD versions of very old films are made, except its the actual studios that scan the original 35mm film as it have such a high resolution when scanned correctly.

Film stock used in the 1970s does not often exceed the equivalent of 2K digital resolution, i.e. you can scan it at 4K but there is no additional picture information there over and above what you get from a 2K scan. You could perform digital upscaling of course but that immediately detracts from the authenticity of what audiences in 1977 actually saw.

Photographic film contains photosensitive chemicals layered as fine grains on a celluloid plastic base. The fineness of the grain determines the detail in the finished image, however a finer grain requires a longer exposure. That’s fine for static scenes but not great for an action movie. The chemistry of cinema film continued to improve (and some directors still use it for certain projects) and today you can get faster, fine-grain film than was available to George Lucas in the mid 1970s.
