Anyone have a digital piano they can reccommend?
 

Hi everyone,


I'd like to get an upright digital piano that will let me just turn it on and start playing. This will also make it easier for the kids to just start playing without the setup hastle I have at the moment.

Right now I have to hook up my computer and only have a MIDI controller that needs to be use it with software.


I'd like it to sound decent and as well as piano, probably have strings too.
Full size keys.



The ability to do MIDI out so it can be hooked up to my music software and used with other instruments would be beneficial.


Anyone recommend anything? I've seen some by Yamaha that look quite good.

We’ve had a Yamaha Clavinova for nearly 25 years. They have excellent sound, good weighted keys and a selection of voices, plus a lot of clever tuning tricks we’ve never needed. They also have MIDI and USB connectivity should you ever need it, but they are designed to stand alone and their internal speakers are excellent. You would end up spending around £1,500 for a fairly basic model that would still do everything you need it to. You can of course spend more than twice this amount for additional bells and whistles (Bluetooth, many extra voices, baby grand form factor etc).

I have a Roland FP-10 Digital Piano. I know it can do MIDI, but never used it. This keyboard is mainly used as a digital piano rather than an "electric keyboard" with the bells and whistles. I used to play the keyboard but now more just the piano side of things. The sound on it though is great, and full sized weighted 88 keys.

Yeah that's very nice, I would have liked something like that, but I had to compromise due to (lack of) space. Hence the FP-10 suited me as it's very slim-lined but without compromising the sound quality. Slides under the bed easily enough without taking up too much space.

Going from a dated electric keyboard to full sized weighted keys was a bit of a shock to start and took a bit of getting used to.

Probably best to go to a music shop and try a few out would be my best advice. And honestly you don't realise how big these things are till you get them home. Looking at videos or photos doesn't really quite match up.

Very shiny.

Back when we bought ours it was all about polyphony (how many notes it could play simultaneously). These days it’s all about partial sustain and harmonics that really do make the thing sound like an actual piano. And you should be able to get that model for under £800 too.

I also like the compactness of that one; ours is a bit of a monster by modern standards and presently lives in the garage as we just don’t have room for it in the lounge any more. They seem to have been able to make the chassis on this one a bit slimmer by integrating all the function selections into the actual piano keyboard itself rather than having a separate bank of controls above the keyboard. In fact I’m actually tempted to go measure up and see if we could fit one of these in the house - the weighting on our old keyboard has suffered from years of enthusiastic attention by the kids, and especially the eldest who composes in GarageBand, including his percussion …

Yeah I quite like the compact size. Our house isnt big so this would fit in quite nicely without taking up too much space.



I want to go and give one a go to really hear the sound myself instead of in videos.

The reallife pianos they sample for these really sound good. The speakers themselves built in seem to deliver quite a loud sound too.
