Broadband configuration/connection

Have a cable modem connected to the PC via a USB connection and all works fine, want to share the broadband via a router to another PC. This means an ethernet cable from modem to router and then to PCs. Does this mean I will have to go through the process of re-installing my broadband connection again ? (I remember the installation instructions said use one type of cable or the other), I'm assuming the configurations may be different, or, could I just remove the USB cable now, insert an ethernet (no router) and my broadband connection would continue as before.

Re: Broadband configuration/connection

You do not have to reinstall or reregister the modem. You can move over to using ethernet now without a problem assuming that you have ethernet on your PC and the appropriate drivers installed. Once you put the router in then you should restart the modem but that should be it. The router itself will need some configuration depending on the model and services that it offers.

So just to confirm, as things stand now I can remove the USB connection between my PC and the modem, replace it with an ethernet cable, do nothing else and my broadband should continue as if nothing has happened ?

you *must* reboot the cable modem when you switch connections- pull the power out, remove the usb cable, wait 30 seconds, replace the power, then when SYNC and RDY go solid on the modem connect the ethernet cable.

Then things should go swimmingly :)

[Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router

Two PCs, one XP, one Windows 98, NTL Broadband modem connection set up on XP PC, purchased router and set up as advised in posting on this forum (at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=38856 ) Original PC with XP still works fine with broadband, other PC unable to connect to internet, this one has never had any internet connection, should I run the NTL broadband installation disk on this machine and if so do I enter the same details as I did on the XP PC ?

I'm assuming you have an ethernet card in your Win 98 PC. If so simply connect that to the router using ethernet cable, switch on the PC, and it should be running.

I'll merge this with your last thread as it all relates to how to configure and install your network, and may reduce duplication of previous questions and answers.

Yes, card installed and recognised but still no connection...

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router

So the ethernet card is getting an IP address from the router?

No network icon on the bottom of the taks bar with a red cross through it?

Check contol panel > network connections - right click the network card and check status or properties - is the IP address given assigned by DHCP?

Check in internet options, the connections tab, then lan settings...look to see if the 'automatically detect settings' is ticked.

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router

You will not need to run the ntl installation disk. The issue is to ensure your network settings on the Win 98 PC are being issued by the router, and not a legacy from something else.

Has the win 98 PC ever been connected to anything, even dial up?

Hope to reply to some of the questions before more arrive !!
Don't know if the card is getting an IP address from the router (How do I check ?)
No Network icon on task bar
'AUTOMATICALLY DETECT SETTINGS' is ticked
Win 98 did at one time connect to intenet via a dialup modem (Not NTL)

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router

I'd delete the dial up connection if its still listed

Re: [Merged] Linksys Befsr41 4 port router

hmm, no network card being seen by the PC?

Open control panel > system > look for device manager (sometimes under hardware).

Are there any yellow "?" icons (if so right click and delete them). Similarly and icons with a red "x" (right click and deleted). Then reboot the PC. You should be prompted to install drivers, so have the Win 98 or other driver disks ready.
