Virgin Media O2 to Upgrade Existing UK Network with Full Fibre

Well this is good news - can't yet see any press release for it though.

The latest combined Q2 2021 results from broadband ISP, TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 has, among other things, revealed that they plan to completely upgrade their existing Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFX) network – some 14.3 million premises – with Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband tech by the end of 2028.

Is this the reason VirginO2 have been upgrading underground chambers in our area or Excavate footway to repair chamber- NSC07155

Re: Virgin Media O2 to Upgrade Existing UK Network with Full Fibre

Makes sense in many ways, and nice to see a company choosing to invest the extra £40 per premesis to upgrade to FTTP, rather than going for the cheaper option of Docsis 4.

Presumably if they hadn't gone down this route, there would eventually have been product/speed differentiation between the HFC network and the expanding Lightening FTTP footprint.

Good to see more talk of possible wholesale again too. As someone who can't get an Openreach connection, I'd welcome some competition for my custom!

Do we think the 3.1 rollout will continue, or will this replace that too?..

The company will continue to maintain and develop its cable network during the upgrade period, which includes meeting its 2021 gigabit targets and utilising the network’s multigigabit capability to deliver speeds above 2Gbps in future.

By the end of this year, Virgin Media O2 will deliver speeds of 1.1Gbps across its entire network, meeting the Government’s stated broadband targets four years ahead of schedule.

From what I‘ve seen, they are hoping to use as much existing infrastructure as possible (duct, chambers & cabinets) and as they are overbuilding that means all the existing cables will stay in-situ, I don’t know how they sold it to the shareholders but the network is stuffed full in many many locations and cabinets are also full or falling apart. This will take a lot of extra work.

Noice. Will allow them to advertise directly to gamers again ;)

Though with them dual-running both networks, it's going to be another case of new customers get a better deal and better network, isn't it?

I remember reading about them planning the merge (back in May).
I wasnt aware it had happened, been busy with life in general, and becoming a grandparent.

Still - while 1.1Gbps would be nice, its much better upload Im really after - hopefully FTTP will help on that.

Does this mean the hardware will change eventually from the SuperHub or will it always be locked down?
