Connected.. but not working!

:(

Hi Guys,

Well today I went out and bought a shiny new wireless laptop, and a netgear router.

I use telewest broadband, it usually connects from the back of the modem to a usb socket. My pc has an ethernet thingy at the back too tho.

So I connected the cable modem to the router using a rj45 cable, and the laptop wireless connection works.
I connected the desktop pc via ethernet from the router with another ethernet cable, and it says connected but the internet doesn't work?

Sorry I'm not very good at explaining these things, can anyone offer a solution?

ben :dunce:

Erm did you turn all the equipment off before changing cables?
Switch all off (shut down PC properly)
connect
turn on SACM
wait for lights to lock/ settle
turn on router
wait for lights to lock/ settle
turn on PC
open browser and follow instructions for router, you may be better off using an ethernet cable to connect to the PC till you get everything set up properly.

Aha so wireless and internet are fine for laptop but not PC? Have you checked in your internet explorer, tools, internet options, connections that you are not using a proxy?
Also have you run the software that would have come with the router? Did you use the ethernet cable that came with the router and is it plugged in to the correct port on the router?
If you go to start, run
type in
cmd
press enter
type
ipconfig /all
press enter
what information comes up on the screen? (at least one should be an IP address)
Are you running a software firewall?

So far i've changed the connection (it comes up at local area connection 3) so that it automatically tries to find a ip address.
I've connected it to the right socket, I have McAfee Firewall but nothing comes up on the screen... i'll do the igconfig now

What router is it? If it has 4 ports have you tried a different port on the router? Does a light on the front of the router come on when you plug the PC into the router?

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Can you access the router config page in IE from the desktop? Have you checked what your connection settings in IE are?

benukb 08-12-2006 17:44

Re: Connected.. but not working!

Nope I can't access the modem from the desktop, and the internet setting are the same as they were before. :S

Re: Connected.. but not working!

What are the settings? You are going through a router now which means some things can cause issues. Have you rebooted the PC again just in case. Also, only one pc can access the router config page at a time so make sure the laptop isn't logged into it at the time that you are trying from the PC.

Oh and ......
what router is it....... again ;)
