National Pie Week - What's your favourite?

So this week has been National Pie Week.

I do love a good pie, especially when eating it in a good country pub.

What is your favourite filling?

Mine has to be Steak and Ale. I like a good crusty pastry with deep filling and plenty of gravy on the top.
Topped off with some vegetables and either mash or chips.

Closely in second place I'd go for a Chicken, Bacon, and Mushroom.

I'm hungry already!

I like a suet pastry on my pies. Too many pubs put some sort of stew into a pot and whack piece of puff pastry on top and call it a pie.

In Winchester we have a restaurant called Piecaramba that sells pies.

For the filling something spicy and meaty does me. Or steak and kidney is nice.

Steak in ale. I make a batch up with long slow cooked beef with onions and mushrooms. Then in oval ceramic dishes to freeze. I top with puff pastry.

In this cold weather a pie ticks all the boxes. Proper good stuff.

Washed down with a nice drink, happy days.

Another popular choice but I have to say I have never liked kidney in a pie.
Can't eat it.

A local pie maker (the Pie Collective, Otley) make a smashing family sized Beef Bourguigon pie (Ox Cheek and Skirt mixed with plenty of Root veg, Mushrooms, Shallots and Red Wine), and individual sized slow cooked brisket & pancetta in a dark Yorkshire ale gravy pies.

They’re my favourites.

I know people who swear by Wakefield Pie Shop which only opens Fri & Sat nights 9pm until after nightclub kicking out time. Never been myself as it's way past my bedtrime!

For me it used to be a greasey burger after clubbing all night. A pie would've been awesome!

That sounds so good. I might need to go there one day to get one. Red wine definately needed, both in the pie and in the glass.

As for sweet pies, I do love a Mince Pie, warmed up under the grill with a dash of Jack Daniels on the top. Quality!

Bolleaux!

Vegetarians don’t live longer, it only seems that way due to boredom… ;)
