The new Batgirl movie has been scrapped by Warner Bros Discovery months before its planned release.

Seems strange if it has been finished not to release it on HBO anyway

Hopefully Netflix can get distribution rights.... Ridiculous decision to shelve a completed movie.

The people who made it deserve better.

From reading the article the potential losses will not go on the books this way so I guess it is a tax write off?

Could this be a turning point where they realised going too woke is affecting them?

The typical Batgirl redhead replaced with a Latina actress and having Batgirls best friend been transgender might have been the straw that broke the camels back.

I've seen this nonsense comment everywhere. The black Captain America will probably see thousands of gammon spontaneously exploding

It's a tax dodge by the new owners at WB. Simples

Re: Batgirl get canned

It costs money to release a film as well. There is more here: https://variety.com/2022/film/news/b...os-1235332062/

Quote:

Even before David Zaslav took the reins of the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery as CEO this spring, the exec went on a well-publicized listening tour designed to repair the company’s relationship with the creative community. As part of that effort, Zaslav has made no secret of reversing Kilar’s strategy and committing to releasing first-run feature films in theaters before putting them on HBO Max.

“Batgirl” found itself on the bad end of that decision, apparently neither big enough to feel worthy of a major theatrical release nor small enough to make economic sense in an increasingly cutthroat streaming landscape. Spending the money to expand the scope of “Batgirl” for theaters — plus the $30 million to $50 million needed to market it domestically and the tens of millions more needed for a global rollout — could have nearly doubled spending on the film, and insiders say that was a non-starter at a company newly focused on belt-tightening and the bottom line. (Spokespeople for Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to comment for this story.)

Releasing the movie on HBO Max would seem to be the most obvious solution. Instead, the company has shelved “Batgirl” — along with the “Scoob!” sequel — and several sources say it will almost certainly take a tax write-down on both films, seen internally as the most financially sound way to recoup the costs (at least, on an accountant’s ledger). It could justify that by chalking it up to a post-merger change of strategy.
The film also had a pretty small budget for a DC property.

Something weird is happening at Warner Bros anyway since they merged with Discovery.

Seen more than a few people throw derogatory remarks at those voicing their displeasure over so many movies destroyed with diversity and gender politics put before a good story and casting.

Considering the news article said they made this decision after doing a screen test and judging the feedback, its reasonable to make a judgment that they didn't like the content and the content was as I said before.

Some people are too quick to jump in to be offended for others and try and are hypocrites trying to cause offence by name calling. Some are too stupid to realise...if we are playing that game ;)

The Lesbian race changing Batwoman didnt fair too well either. Cancelled.

The PC/Woke Tom Swift did so badly out of the gate that it was cancelled after just 5 episodes.
It aired directly after a highly popular show as well (Superman & Lois) something which normally helps boost a shows viewer figures.

The PC/Woke 4400 reboot also did poorly, and also got cancelled.

Wow, Tom Swift got 2.7 out of 10 on IMDB and 18% on Rotten tomato. Looks like another case of instead of good writing and casting they did the current trend of race changing the main character, making them gay and making the episodes about gender politics according to reviews. Same thing destroying most new tv and movies these days,

The CW's new "4400" series follows the same premise as the original USA Network show "The 4400" with a renewed focus on diversity within the cast and social-justice issues like police brutality, immigration, and women's rights.
Its there in black and white. No wonder that failed too. Seems anything made in the last 2 years and coming out now has this problem. Hopefully writers and producers are seeing this mess so new series created now that air in a couple of years time are past this stupidness.

The Rings of Power looks like its going to one I miss because of these issues but it might keep viewers as LOTR has so many fans who will watch it anyway. Even the ones complaining about all the changes of people and races that Tokien described in detail but are changed for diversity and it made about strong females etc. Its telling that they have had to hire 'influencers' to give good reviews about all the diversity and that stuff.

Films get bad screen tests all the time. That's why they have them. This one wasn't even that bad: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/mo...ed-1235191932/

Quote:

Either way, when a very early version of the film test screened, with temp VFX and score, it landed a score in the low 60s and is believed to have only tested once. Film producers and executives have long noted that test screenings are best used to determine whether audiences are engaged or disengaged during certain parts of the film, not as a final judgment call on a movie. For example, horror films that end up doing well have been known to test in the 60s. Batgirl’s test score, which was for a director’s cut, is comparable to scores for the first It (2017), which wound up grossing $700.3 million globally, as well as an early score for the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Both of those films tested in the 60s.
As mentioned before there is some issue at WB. This morning there is speculation HBO Max is in trouble: https://www.thewrap.com/hbo-max-layo...nings-preview/

I would have loved comic book movies when I was a teenager..Now there seems to be so many vying for attention. Are they bringing in the audiences in the same numbers? Perhaps this may be affecting audience numbers and saving money has become more of a consideration in the present economic times?

It really is down to the finances at Warner Bros and their merger with Discovery. It looks like they're going to close HBO Max, fire a lot of the staff, and have HBO as a section in Discovery+.

Wherever possible WB are firing and cutting across HBO.

She is a redhead in the film

There doesn't appear to be the same outrage about Alicia Silverstone playing her as a blonde in Batman & Robin...

No doubts there are other issues too but a lot of people in the industry are saying this is unprecedented so I think there are multiple things at work here.

Dying a Latinos hair red isn't quite the same as a natural redhead but I see where you are coming from. I bet she didnt have to hide in this heatwave so she didn't turn red like a lobster.

Personally I never watched that old Batman and Robin movie and wouldn't know who was and wasn't upset back when that came out 25 or so years ago...

But back then they didn't have the superhero studios playing diversity and gender politics in EVERY tv show and film so the occasional thing like that no one would have had any issue with.
