Possible to connect to your own hotspot?

Some ISP's allow their customers to use their connection to create a hotspot for others outside to use.

Would it be technically possible to disconnect from your own connection and connect to the hotspot derived from your own connection?

Re: Possible to connect to your own hotspot?

It likely depends on how it's authenticated.

For instance my understanding is that Virgin Media will block a cable customer authenticating with their My Virgin Media details from connecting to the hotspot generated from their own Hub. The main reason is because the Hub hotspot speed will be slower than the home network one, so it make sure the device always prefers the home network one when both are configured on the device.

However a cable customer using a Virgin Mobile SIM for authentication won't be blocked from using the hotspot, as the hotspot is part of the data options for all Virgin Mobile customers.

Thanks Ben.

My reason for asking is I wondered if this was a way to create a pseudo VPN.

Even when you're connected to the hotspots, the provider will know who you are.
