Anything you have put on it will still exist if you need access just get a trail with one of the many premium providers. I am on a lifetime deal with Tweaknews. Only costs me 30 euros a year

I doubt the Virgin Media will compensate it's users for a reduction in the service they provide!

Do any of you know why it's being switched off? Is it just a cost cutting measure?

I've been using their news server for about thirty years, so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'll have a look at Tweak News but can anybody recommend any others.

It needs to be reasonably fast, free or low cost and carry the alt.binary groups, in particular the various groups related to old time radio?

Ive always wanted to join usenet but ive heard bad things about Viruses from its content and also i have no idea who to join through to get the most content.

you need to take the same care when using usenet as anywhere especially any fire share and torrents.

Just make sure you've got a good AV protection, sign up to a usenet provider with retention that meets your needs and there you are. Add in something like Sonarr, NZB Finder and Plex and away you go.

Sonarr is a program that will automatically curate a library of TV shows, searching for new episodes of watched programs automatically. It can be combined with Radarr that does the same for movies, and Lidarr which does the same for music.

These can connect directly to torrent sites and NZB indexing sites via an "API" (Application Programming Interface, a way for a program to browse a website in this case), or via aggregator programs such as NZBhydra and Jackett, which "wrap" multiple NZB sites (in the case of NZBhydra) or torrent sites (in the case of Jackett) and present them to Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr.

An application such as Ombi can connect to Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr to provide a "Requests" system for friends/family. Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr can be linked to websites like Trakt to automatically download popular films.

Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr don't actually do any downloading, rather they monitor for NZBs/torrents and pass these to Sabnzbd (for NZBs) or Deluge (for torrents) to download, monitor the download process, and then sort, rename, and organise downloaded items into folders.

Plex is then a media streaming solution, that can give you a "Netflix Like" streaming experience, with subtitles, synopsis, actor information, watched status, transcoding, resume where you left off, next episode on deck, share with family functionality.

This is a lot of individual programs, but once set up you have a very easy to use automatic system for downloading and viewing your favourite shows.

When I got the email saying it was finishing, they did state I could cancel as it's a reduction in service.

I'm with Easynews as well (for backup) and the binary posts are scanned and flagged if they are picked up as being virused.

After a while, you see the regular posters and know who you can trust. You can usually spot the virused posts a mile off. I've been using the VM / Easynews usenet for 22 years and not been caught out yet.

I thought VMs Usenet service was on the same backbone as Easynews. For better retention and les DMCA takedown you need to step away from US based companies

I've not had any problems with retention. There are quite a few people complaining about take downs etc with Giganews. Quite a few on comedy.british and some of the other .british groups have been using Virgin Usenet for years with no issues.
