Doctor Who General Discussion

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/12/16/doctor_who_new_companion/

So, new companion time.. Anyone willing to guess whether they'll be male or female this time?

I'm thinking a young River song might be on the cards?

Didn't they say it was someone 'new'. River Song is anything but

Plus it couldn't be River Song as she's been accounted for

Baby > New York - Brought up by The Silence and no Doctor

New York > Let's Kill Hitler - Grew up with Amy and Rory and no Doctor

and then she regenerates into her last incarnation which is Alex Kingston.

If it was not somebody new then I would say it could have been Captain Jack, I know John Barrowman wants to appear in the new series and now Torchwood seems to be once again on hold it would be a perfect time for him to appear. I hope its not james cordon.

I enjoyed it. BTW, did anyone else spot a subtle reference to the original series?

Spoiler:
Bill Bailey's character announced that he and his squad were from Androzani Major. Peter Davison's Doctor was poisoned on Androzani Minor in a mine controlled by a conglomerate run by a man from Androzani Major.

Because it was there to be spotted by all Classic Who fans. :D

It wasn't really all that obscure though, the story in question was called The Caves of Androzani and was a regereration story, which heightens its status somewhat.

How is it you can see it getting canned, when the powers-that-be at the BBC can't see that?

The show is flying as high in the ratings as ever, and the audience appreciation index is sky high as well.

You appear to be confusing your personal taste with the commissioning policy of a national broadcaster with a remit to serve a wide audience. ;)

I think Christmas specials of any series shouldn't be taken too seriously .They are just meant to be a bit of fun and most are not linked to the main series' timeline ...see Eureka and Warehouse 13

Doctor Who was 2nd in the ratings last year, and 3rd again in 2009, so yes you are right - it's a big pull and winner.

Dr Who tends to swing from episodes based at children to episodes based towards more an adult audience. With it being xmas it was a suitable childrens episode though still enjoyable to any adult who realised that fact ;)

I realise it was made to the Daily Star so should be taken with several council winter salt mountains . I think her age might be a restriction, but it would be an interesting experiment to say the least.

I'd like to see a 3 doctors episode, with the 3 doctors since the reboot, you could even throw Paul Mcgann too.

Wouldn't it be great to see his doctor again?

Chris 31-12-2011 13:49

Re: Doctor Who : Season 7

There is definitely scope to give McGann screentime, though I think some sort of flashback would be the best way to do it.

Multi-Doctor episodes can be fun but TBH I think they're a bit ... <insert slightly rude term commonly used on Who forums to describe ideas that give excessive thrills to hardcore fans>. ;)

Regarding the episode about all the hotel rooms, who did The Doctor see in his room? I noticed his room number was 11, did he see his replacement, number 12? Gawd, I don't know if it's my age or hormones but I think I cried at some point during all of the last six episodes...

I sorta remember her from Emmerdale. She will be joining the show in the Christmas special. It looks like that'll be airing in between part 1 and 2 of the series this time.

Lots of info via Twitter.

- There will be 6 episodes this year, including the Xmas Special. Then 8 next year. Jenna's character will first be seen at Xmas.

- Steven Moffat: "Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with [spoilers]* in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time"

Coleman's Doctor Who debut will be in the Christmas special after Matt Smith's current companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) has made what writer Steven Moffat describes as a "heartbreaking" exit in the fifth episode of 2012.
Quote:

"Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters. Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.” He said there would be six episodes this year with eight more in 2013.
He revealed Gillan would be written out in the fifth episode of 2012 in a "final encounter" with the weeping angels.

No, Moffat did state in an interview that we will see every incarnation of the Daleks together for the first time.

Never expected to see the Special Weapons Dalek again though. They look ace! (pun intended)

'Dinosaurs!!........On a spaceship' love that line.

Everything looks epic, from the scenery to the monsters. Even though the budget is smaller it looks more expensive.

River is also back by the look of it. Was hoping we'd seen the last of her.

I fully understand why the BBC keep it gong, but I think the new iteration should be drawn to a close, maybe just after the 50th anniversary.

What I don't want to see is it fading away with crap story lines and crap acting.

Both of which are subjective, of course. The show regularly gets 8m+ consolidated viewers so it's probably safe to say yours in not the majority view ;) (and also that it's not going off-air anytime soon :p:

Personally, I'm wondering if I should watch it live on FreeviewHD jst so I can't start "instant replay"ing the good bits. You know, just watch it all the way through once, uninterrupted. Then again, probably not! ;):D

Personally I don't think you will. However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that Mr Moff has said that there will be no two-parters this season which I think is a good thing as, with most of them I tend to think "well all the that best bits of that could have all be done in one ep".

Well the thing is I don't feel like I can comment on it if I haven't given it a chance.

It's like Star Trek The Next Generation - I think that started crap and didn't really pick up until the second season.

I don't like Matt Smith but there's always room for improvement.

Trouble is I do like the idea of seeing the special weapons Dalek again so I'm biased in the wrong way tonight.

I wonder how she will become the next companion in the Christmas Special, given that she's been turned into a Dalek and then the planet she was on was destroyed.

Will an earlier version of her become the companion, or will the Doctor somehow undo what happened to her?

The Daleks are annoying. The amount of times they have wiped out only to come back by some stupid loophole is crazy. At least this time they kept a load alive instead of destroying them all again.

Hopefully we won't see them again for a while. The best bad guys in the series have been the ones that are more abstract like the 'evil' on the Impossible Planet, the Weeping Angels, and The Silence.

Well that was amazing! Loved the big secret involving JLC. Although I believe her actual companion character may end up being a relative or her from before the crash. Then that would undo the daleks forgetting the doctor.

Seems the new daleks were slighty altered design and colour wise, and that they are just the upper class units with the bronze rtd daleks as the main population.

Every time I see them I get reminded of the times I got to use the fischerteknik stuff at school.

Loved tonight’s episode. I thought the robots were very Douglas Adams. :)

Really liking this new series. Less of the slightly-difficult-to-follow-story-arc and more fun!

Did you notice that they were voiced by Mitchell & Webb?

Not long to go now :D

Anyways.. After viewing the trailer for tonight's episode, was anyone else reminded of Red Dwarf's Gunmen of the Apocalypse?

I'm not that much of a fan :p:

Anyway... back on-topic.

Another good ep tonight. Good but not brilliant. A little "talky" in the middle (some might say 'preachy') but still good.

Nice to see Ben Browder on TV again.

Another episode examining the Doctor's morality, and what he is willing to do...
