Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Just wanted an expert opinion on the results below, its not a full 24 hours but I think it might explain a few things. Also it would be interesting to see other peoples as a comparison.

Mine's only got like that (and the above is a better one.) since Octoberish. Before I had better than Seph. Have you seen his infinity one?http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ss/td-p/377841
|
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
yeah his infinity looks ok, and looks stabler than idnet FTTC.
the VM graphs look odd in that some there posted with low load but they then suddenly get high load out of nowhere, the VM network can jump in and out of congestion mode far too easily. Even your graph on that page pip has it. ---------- Post added at 15:30 ---------- Previous post was at 15:03 ---------- I replied on that thread now, this thread made me laugh. guy posts about been way too many high utilsiation problems on the forum, then a VM rep comes in and tells he also got high utilisation. :) http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...on/td-p/370171 |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Yeh Chrys, utilisation seems to be a big problem with VM considering the management on the network. Kinda proves it's not working!
If you look at my live graph above you'll see it's jumped again this afternoon. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
yeah some of your graphs show you suffering now also, expecially the one on the VM forums.
I will maintain what I said months back. 1 - management needs to be 24/7, load spikes etc. arent just a peak time thing. 2 - it should be dynamic based on capacity utilisation. 3 - it should not pick on just a few protocols, what happens if noone uses those protocols? noone to throttle. it should pick on heavier user's first and then keep going until there is free capacity to maintain QoS. every other system I see employed tends to fail, especially protocol shaping, yet isp's in the UK seem to favour protocol shaping time and time again for some reason. Of course management shouldnt be used to replace upgrades, it should be used as a means to handle short term issues created by unexpected outages, balancing issues etc. |

Well, here's a thought... as a direct hard-evidence comparison I'll sample things with my current setup then drop the Super Hub in tomorrow (no IP flood/firewall) and see what happens. I'd love to see if the lameness of my particular unit can be proven in graph form.

Well, I think I got all you bitches beat. :D I think that was a pretty average day; some streaming from iPlayer, a little low-speed P2P and moderate web browsing. Nothing too heavy. I'm very impressed considering that's the DOCSIS1 line: I know most of my neighbours on VM are still using their old Ambit 250 modems. Shortly I have to drop in the Super Hub, don't I? Boy am I NOT looking forward to that. EDIT: The red bar is when I disconnected modem and router. Changed from live updated PNG to static JPG hosted on Flickr (PhotoBucket was down at the time). |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Not too shabby zeke, not too shabby, and surprisingly linear with not much of a peak time increase at all.

Talking of which, the Super Hub is running now. The live update is below. Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Short answer: the VM call centre system is very inefficient. Within the same call last week I was offered the 30Mb speed for free, then told I'd need to pay £30 despite already having the Super Hub. But no, never paid a penny and don't plan to. I'd have the 30Mb upgrade right now except I probably can't get a VMNG300 modem sent out and registered and I have no interest in running my very unreliable Super Hub constantly to get it. Just waiting for the May bridge mode update we've been repeatedly promised. |

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Well I'll be damned.
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/03/45.jpg https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/03/46.jpg Comparable performance. But I will point out NO-ONE in the household is using the Super Hub wireless and I haven't been in much so very little in the way of LAN transfers - these are usually the things that cause trouble. Lower latency is no doubt a result of being on the DOCSIS3 network rather than legacy DOCSIS1. I wanted to take the Super Hub out but I'm trying to sign up for the new firmware pilot and I might just leave it in. And if I do that I suppose it's worth going up to 30Mb. I'm not keen on the idea because of all the trouble it has caused in the past, but if it hasn't done something stupid by the weekend I might have to grin and bear it. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
you may still be on the docsis1 network as you on the same tier service. They wont move you just because you have the superhub.
for connectivity quality the superhub is fine, its issues as far as I am concerned are on the router side of it although I have had some dropouts early on the uptime for me at the moment is ok. I suspect modem issues that do occur will be a side affect of the router having issues as its an all in one device. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Nope, definately DOCSIS3. Top light on right side is blue. ;)
|
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
This is the second Superhub, installed last night, and I'm proved right; it didn't fix the fault because it's a network issue!

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
so VM have a 20meg config for bonded channels, nice.
|
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Yeah, surprisingly they do.
So what's the deal with 30Mb, is that still 4 bonded on the down and just 1 on the up? |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
same yeah, same as 50meg 4 down and 1 up. No services bond on the up yet and I suspect when they do bring it in, all tiers will use bonding (that have docsis3 modem). As it manages capacity much better, gets rid of balancing issues.
eg. my live graph looks ok but if I were to change to the other upstream channel allocated to my port I bet it would be more congested. So there is 2 upstream channels on my port but VM dont bond them yet. |

the ambit 300 modem can't handle it but it can with a 50Mb connection which uses exactly the same and gives more information to the user in the stats pages etc. Could that be why VM won't allow it? Infinity 4th April! |

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Or someone maxed out the line or there was a burst of traffic for a single ping interval.
Did the spike cause problems with your service? |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
In my opinion VM have 2 prime reasons for pushing out the superhub neither to do with capability of delivering 100mbit.
1 - making easier for tech support staff. 2 - ability to remotely control the device. |

Just had a bit of wonkyness from the superhub. The wifi died and needed resetting (hence the slither of packetloss) The wifi seemed to start acting up during the spike in average latency. Odd. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Quote:
If you look at my first graph (post No.1) where the latency increases at peak time, they said utilisation only reached 60% during that time, so as far as VM are concerned they cant see a problem or understand why my gaming is so pants, kind of makes me feel like a fraud to be honest but I'm not making it up when I say its pretty dire. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...07-03-2011.png So for now I've asked to be downgraded to 30/3 to see if that makes any difference and I will just have to wait till Sky pull their finger out of their bums, and get me on their 20Mbps Unlimited offering. |
