It was completely removed from Ex ntl. I think in other areas that are not ex ntl virgin may use it as a preview channel of what events will be shown but you will have to order the main event through the ondemand menu as you normally do.

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

In the Now & Next listings on that PPV Events 3 channel on the weekend I noticed "Hatton vs [whoever he was fighting]" as an entry so I assume that's what it was being used for - for the channel 0 pay-per-view. Maybe it's a new thing they're trying out as there have been many people in the past who have had problems accessing pay-per-view events from channel 0.

Did anyone actually order the fight over the weekend? If so, did you have to tune to channel 0 to watch it or was there a message on channel 0 telling you to flick to that PPV Events 3 channel?

Also noticed over the weekend that channel 0's holding slide now actually advertises upcoming events on the slide, instead of just keeping the same old caption up all year round. Not sure if it still is advertising upcoming events but it certainly was over the weekend (just a static slide though).

I don't know why they have to have live PPV events on a linear channel - surely they can just deliver the event via On Demand like they do with everything else? Even back in the days of when you had to pick the time you wanted to watch a film - something like that could be used again for PPV events surely?

Does anyone know if BBCs iplayer which is supposed to have a full launch on Monday will be on it's own channel?

paul_hadley 28-05-2008 14:01

Re: Virgin Media Changelog

The launch next week is just the launch of an iPlayer channel on the EPG.

It's not the full launch (ie. it won't be integrated in the On Demand menus yet).

That's coming later this summer.

Why is TMF still called The Music Factory on the EPG? As far as I know, they haven't used that name in years?

I'm not sure I agree with the new groupings (as well as those to come next week). They seem a bit haphazard the way they are mixed as well as the big gap between Bravo and Trouble which I thought they would keep together. I imagine that E! will move elsewhere at some point too.

Do they need the agreement of the channel owner to move it in the EPG?

As far as I know the EPG channel numbers are up to Virgin Media so they (Virgin) just need to tell the broadcaster the few weeks before hand so that broadcaster can tell all the TV Books (Like Radio Times and Whats on TV.) the new channel numbers for that week book.

On the other noted I think Virgin will move Living or Virgin1 so that all the ITV +1 channels and ITV HD can stay together.

Well I think Discovery would be upset if they grouped DMAX in with the other Discovery channels rather than in with the entertainment channels where the target audience for DMAX hang out.

Actually, to be pedantic, it's 'SetantaSports 1' and 'Setanta Sports 2', at least on my ex-NTL box!

Oh, there are so many of those with things like the spacing in '+1' variants etc. And, in On Demand (or is that OnDemand?), there were two entries for the exact same series ('Close to Home' I think) but with an extra space in one of them.

Now I have to spend the next hour checking my spelling and syntax before I post this. :(

Long live pedantry! :waving:

I knew someone would pick me up on that. Strictly speaking 'and' is a conjunction and does not belong at the beginning of a sentence. But (another conjunction), as I recall from school, exceptions are allowed, especially if the 'and' or 'but' is followed by a comma as mine are. This changes the emphasis. I did consider using 'also' but I wanted that emphasis. In the case of 'but', 'however' (or even 'although') would have been just as good.

I'm using Opera as my browser due to its very low resource requirements so I don't have the luxury of Google Toolbar.

With apologies for being very off topic! (Oh, no! A sentence started with a preposition. Will it never end?)

Hmm! My V Box rebooted a couple of days ago but that has happened before so I wasn't overly concerned. Today, I powered it off for an hour and now it goes through the power-on diagnostics, gets to AP:53 then displays the last channel accessed (601 BBC News) and goes into standby (one LED lit). I've had this with my previous box which was replaced about two months ago when it ultimately failed completely. I used to be able to get it back by changing channel just before it went to sleep but I can't seem to get that to work with this newer box.

I shall persevere then call engineer!

I noticed some changes to On Demand today.

When watching On Demand videos (I saw it on music videos anyway), if you press the OK/Select button you will now see the now/next bar is see-through whereas it was solid colour before like it normally is when viewing it on normal channels.

If you press the "i" button when watching On Demand videos, this is now also see-through.

Also, they seem to have got rid off the graphic at the bottom left when watching On Demand videos - ie. no more coloured forward/back etc - it's now just the programme clock with a little icon next to it.

Hmm! It makes sense to drop the superfluous word 'Channel' although I don't see the need to drop the word 'The'. As for 'Bloomberg', the addition of the word 'Television' (wouldn't 'TV' have done?) must be to distinguish it from other Bloomberg services (radio, online, mobile perhaps?).

Remember the trend in expensive but pointless or even disastrous rebranding that went on a few years back (Hunt is on for world's worst rebranding)? More recently, government departments and agencies have been doing it too, in some cases, by adding the word 'and' (e.g. 'Maritime and Coast Guard Agency') presumably resulting in huge expenses in new signage, stationery etc. Why?

I take it you mean the transparent menu that pops up on the left hand side of the screen.

BTW, why have they changed the Play/Pause/Rewind/Fast Forwrd/Stop control in On Demand and iPlayer? I must admit, it does seem more responsive (faster) but the old one was more instructive (beginners could tell what keys had what functions). However, I guess it is fairly intuitive so it's not a great problem.

New On Demand feature I've noticed today - in Music On Demand, if you go into Playlists there's now the ability to skip between songs when you play one using the "1" and "3" buttons on your remote.

Very handy.

Can't wait for the custom playlists feature to launch (if it ever does).
