Ive tried my main player which ive used for 2 years which is pot player

Ive tried doing what it suggests in that but it simply just wont find the MP4 files to associate.

Im not the only one with this issue it seems

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...a-da6eb765fc5b

When i double click an MP4 it asks me what i want to do with it, now i can choose each time to play it but i cannot associate that file type with ANY player including VLC.

Paul 05-10-2021 15:46

Re: Windows 11

Did you try the fix on there ?

Quote:

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Photos -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage
The name implies it may only fix images, but worth a shot.

You can probably edit the registry as well, but I dont know how much its changed since W7/W8.

you may need to browse to the exe of potplayer but as I say following these steps associates an mp4 with potplayer

alanbjames 05-10-2021 16:30

Re: Windows 11

As i stated the option is greyed out, everytime i choose to play an MP4 i have to manually choose what player i cannot set as default app as the option is greyed out.

It doesnt give the option to always use the app

also have you tried reinstalling the app and selecting ALL in the file association option ?

in the default add on list select file type and mp4 then select pot player from there and repeat for other video types this should work. For some reason Pot Player does not show in the App list ( mind you it might if I restart but it does show in file type list)

Running 11 Pro and yes uninstalled and reinstalled both Pot Player and VLC and chose for MP4 to play default and still the same.

I have tried to type MP4 and choose Pot Player but nothing appears its just greyed out.

it is quite strange how your version of pro is different from mine.

Ok try right clicking on the mp4 and selecting properties you should see an opens with attribute with change next to it. Select change and then click pot player that should do it for mp4 permanently. If not go to church cuz God only knows hahaha

I can right click and select open with but i cannot choose it permanently

Maybe if i do a fresh install instead of an upgrade these issues may clear up so when i have a few hours to burn i will do so..

Have you tried a different .mp4 file?

(in case the one you are trying is corrupt)

Paul 05-10-2021 19:15

Re: Windows 11

That wont make any difference, it simply works off the actual extension.
You could create a empty text file with an .mp4 extension and it should still work (ie try and open it with your video player of choice).

Re: Windows 11

Well i did a full reinstall and guess what? It fixed the issue so obviously somewhere along the line during the upgrade process a corruption occurred.

might well have just been a setting somewhere but it is best to do a clean install. If you game you may find the Core Isolation may be enabled meaning you will likely lose some gaming performance

I don't really see anything in 11 which 10 doesn't have, but wouldn't want to use 7 as it's EOL.

To anyone out there using windows 11 im wondering how do you get thumbnails on folders for folders that has pictures in them.

Re: Windows 11

How to get the full right click menu back instead of hitting Shift F10 or Show More Options
1. Open Regedit by hitting the Windows key and typing regedit. Hit Enter to launch it.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID
3. Right-click > New > Key, and paste in this name: {86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}
4. With the new key you just created highlighted, again right-click > New > Key, and paste in this name: InprocServer32
5. Double-click the (Default) registry entry and then hit Enter without typing anything to set its value to blank. Before making this change, you'll see under the Data column that it says (value not set), but once you hit Enter it'll show nothing.
6. Close Registry Editor. To see your new (classic) context menu, either restart your computer or open Task Manager, scroll down to the Windows Explorer process, and right-click > End task. Then File > Run new task and type explorer.exe to restart the Windows explorer process. And there you go: context menus changed!

from what I have been able to glean on this subject it appears the thumbnail folder preview has been removed from windows 11. A reg hack may well show up at some point or M$ may well add it back if enough people complain

Late to this show because I only just installed Windows 11. Started my own thread right next to the Windows 10 thread, because I didn't spot this one.

The installation of W11 on my Asus went very smoothly, but took an age.

So far, I can't see any compelling reason to change from Windows 10, so I won't be upgrading my processor (£200). on my main PC. just to accommodate it.

if the mobo has TPM 1.2 you can use a reg hack to allow install

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup
New > DWORD (32-bit) Value
AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU value 1

My Intel Core i5-6600 3.30GHz (Released 2015) CPU has PTT, which wasn't enabled. I have enabled it. PC health check now says that TPM 2.0 is enabled. but my PC spec still isn't sufficient for W11. The CPU is not supported by W11.

Is it appropriate to use your hack at this stage?

Have found that system/setup doesn't have MoSetup . Is there an alternative key for my system?

I use Acronis for my system images.

EDIT: Have created MoSetup using 'NEW' and have created the key as suggested. PC Health still says the PC is not compatible. Should I use the media creation method opting for reinstall W11?

This says run the exe from the iso/usb so create the media then run it perhaps although the upgrade will likely do the same. It says it then gives a warning rather than a rejection

Progress. Began to install but failed on the second reboot.

Error 0x800F0830
Failed in the SAFE-OS phase with an error during INSTALL_UPDATES operation.

Could be external devices or driver problems, even though I had done a full Windows 10 update. I remember this sort of problem installing W10 on an older machine.

Yes it was, including a second attempt where I uninstalled f-secure and drivers for cameras etc. Same error.

Can I assume that having the internet disconnected stops the installer looking for updates and thereby causing it to fall over? You next answer will tell me whether I want to continue with this or not.

I got a warning telling me that even if I do manage to install W11, I won't get build updates anyway. If that is the case, my attempts end here.

BTW Thanks for your help so far.

I dunno, You can install it on any hardware as long as it has TPM 1.2. My old i5 ex windows 8 took it no problems. I would not flight as a main OS either tbh

In theory the same edits to the iso should work as well and those updated could get away with just editing the registry

But are those edits and workarounds going to work in the future?
Older MBs can have connections for TPM modules, which can be bought separately. My old 4th gen(2013 and still works) Intel MB has the connections. I built a new PC for W11 and that 12th Gen Intel MB also has TPM module connections.

Who knows if it will be updateable for the lifespan of Windows 11 as I said my system is running off Windows 11 that was installed with it all on and now running with it all off with no edits

I know all about the TPM header

If you download the Windows 11 ISO you can use a free program called Rufus (which lets you create a bootable Windows 11 USB Stick). You are given the option to choose No TPM / No SecureBoot

Another article on that site caught my eye;

A plan to make SSDs a requirement for your boot drive.

Although it is wrong to enforce that rule the difference is massive and everyone should really be using them as boot

Really enjoying Windows Subsystem for Android. Sideloaded TVMob along side Adguard APKs so you can run Adguard on the subsystem and it kills all the android apps adverts which is awesome as they can be a nightmare

Also been playing with Docker on Windows Subsystem for Linux another really good feature

Shame Apple being how they are will never allow there to be a Windows Subsystem for iMac

For the very few interested 22H2 appears to have enabled Windows Subsystem for Android in the UK. To install simply make sure PC is up to date and simply install the Amazon Appstore from the Microsoft Store and it should do the rest for you, including all the Virtual stuff if needed.

You can sideload any APK with this but if you want PlayStore you will need to install a modded version of WSA. They are up to Android 12 now iirc. I run the modded version

You can do it on macOS since Catalina I think, in Sonoma (which ive been running for a couple weeks) you can import widgets from your iOS device onto your mac, so you can do it, but within the Apple ecosystem.

There's no way they will change that to interface that with Windows or Android but why should they when macOS and iOS are far superior.

I have played with various hackintosh machines over the years and totally disagree with your final comments

Windows Subsystem for Android being withdrawn. Amazon appstore and android apps are being removed tomorrow (6th March). The whole subsystem is closing down 12 months later.

Shame this as it was a great feature. Oh well
